A 3/2 valve has three ports — supply, outlet and exhaust — and two states. It either feeds the outlet or vents it to exhaust, and that is the whole job.
That makes it the right valve for a single-acting (spring-return) cylinder, on/off air blow, a clamp, switching a vacuum generator or suction cup, and piloting a larger valve.
It cannot run a double-acting cylinder. A double-acting cylinder needs air alternately on two sides, which takes a 5-port valve — the AirTAC 4V series.
Three stations gate cap delivery, seat the cap and blow the finished bottle clear, all run from one 12 V-controlled 3V1 manifold block.
Machine builders and training labs run three spring-return cylinders from a single 12 V bench supply, each 3V1 station triggered by its own controller output.
When an interlocked guard door cuts the 12 V supply, the spring return vents the clamp circuit of a small machine cell, releasing the actuator with no electrical signal at all.
With three valves sharing one base, size each station's duty separately and remember the 3V1 body carries no published Cv - send us the flow-critical cases to check. Where a station demands more flow, the 3V2 series (1/8in and 1/4in, NC or NO selectable, Cv 0.18-0.19, vacuum rated) or the 3V3 (1/4in, Cv 0.62) steps up, and 3V2M serves when a dense manifold outweighs raw flow. For double-acting cylinders you need the 5-port AirTAC 4V family, not a 3/2 valve.
