This model is discontinued
AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ACEJ12X120-40S — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. Simply order the ACEJ12X120-40S in place of this model. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. Confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before ordering.

The AirTAC Airtac ACPJ Adjustable Compact Cylinder ACPJ12X120-40S is a double acting, adjustable stroke DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø12mm bore and 120mm stroke, M5×0.8 air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ACEJ12X120-40S (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
Double acting and adjustable in stroke, the ACPJ12X120-40S is a DIN-standard compact cylinder from AirTAC with a 12 mm bore and a 120 mm stroke. A stop screw trims the extend stroke by up to 40 mm on site, giving a usable range of 80-120 mm without changing the cylinder. At 0.5 MPa it pushes 56.5 N and pulls 42.4 N, rising to 79.2 N push at 0.7 MPa. The 120 mm stroke is longer than the 50 mm maximum standard stroke for this bore, so it is a made-to-order build. This model is discontinued; the current-production replacement is the ACEJ12X120, a drop-in successor in the same bore, stroke and force class.
The short ISO 21287-class body saves about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, which is why it suits slim jigs, guarding gates and gantry pick stations. A fixed TPU bumper sits at both ends and only decelerates the piston at the extremes - it never locks or holds a load, so on air loss the rod still drifts. The body is hard-anodized aluminium with an S45C hard-chrome 6 mm rod, running at 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi) and 30-500 mm/s. Because the -S code is on this model, the magnet is fitted and CMSE / DMSE reed or solid-state switches can be clamped straight onto the body. As a planning figure, treat roughly 34 N (about 0.6 of the push force) as the real working thrust, which lifts around 3 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC ACP datasheet (now discontinued). The ACEJ12X120-40S (ISO 21287) carries the same bore/stroke/force class; confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before installation. Rod type: female thread (blank) or male thread (B). Thread options: PT (blank) / G.
| Pressure | Push force | Pull force |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 MPa | 57 N | 42 N |
| 0.7 MPa | 79 N | 59 N |
| Max (@1.0 MPa) | 12 kgf | |
The ACEJ12X120-40S produces the same force from the same bore. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical; size with a margin.
| ACPJ | DIN compact cylinder (adjustable-stroke, discontinued). |
|---|---|
| 12 | Bore size in mm. |
| ×120 | Stroke length in mm. |
| -40 | Adjustable stroke window (mm the extend stroke can be shortened on site). |
| S | Optional built-in magnet for sensor position sensing (omit for no magnet). |
| B | Rod type: B = male thread; blank = female thread. |
Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).
The fitted magnet and CMSE switch give a positive gate-open signal on a 12 mm bore slide, where the 56.5 N push at 0.5 MPa is enough for a lightweight cover and the 80-120 mm trim range matches shallow trays.
A 40 mm adjustment window lets the technician dial the eject travel between 80 and 120 mm to clear different board sizes, with the M5x0.8 port keeping the manifold footprint small.
The short body, about 50% shorter in mounting length than an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, fits inside a benchtop analyzer frame, pushing sample vials of roughly 3 kg equivalent with a 2:1 margin.
Size both ways before committing: the 16 mm bore gives 100.5 N push at 0.5 MPa for heavier clamps, while the 12 mm bore here keeps 56.5 N for light gates and sensors fixtures. If your part weight is near 3 kg and you need vertical lift, step up a bore rather than trusting the full rating. The stop screw is an end stop for the extend stroke only - it is not a mid-stroke lock, so do not use it to hold a load against gravity. FA/FB flange and LB foot mountings bolt to the standard face, and the fitted -S magnet accepts CMSE / DMSE switches for end-of-stroke signals. Since this model is discontinued, order the ACEJ12X120 instead and confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before the swap, because the ACP family was built to DIN dimensions.
Replacement checklist
Push is 56.5 N and pull is 42.4 N at 0.5 MPa; at 0.7 MPa push rises to 79.2 N and pull to 59.4 N, with a theoretical maximum of 11.5 kgf at 1.0 MPa. The bore is 12 mm with a 6 mm rod, M5x0.8 ports, female M3x0.5 rod thread, operating pressure 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi), proof pressure 1.5 MPa (215 psi), speed 30-500 mm/s and a temperature range of -20 to +70 C. The 120 mm stroke is a made-to-order length because the standard maximum for this bore is 50 mm.
The -40 code means a 40 mm adjustment window: an external stop screw shortens the 120 mm extend stroke by up to 40 mm, so the working range is 80-120 mm. The stop is a mechanical end stop, not a load-holding brake, and the fixed TPU bumpers at both ends only decelerate the piston at the extremes. This model is discontinued; the current-production drop-in is the ACEJ12X120 (same bore, stroke and force class). Confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping, since the ACP family followed DIN dimensions.
