This model is discontinued
AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ACEJ12X40-20SB — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. Simply order the ACEJ12X40-20SB in place of this model. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. Confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before ordering.

The AirTAC Airtac ACPJ Adjustable Compact Cylinder ACPJ12X40-20SB is a double acting, adjustable stroke DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø12mm bore and 40mm stroke, M5×0.8 air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ACEJ12X40-20SB (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
This compact cylinder works double acting, with air driving the rod out and pulling it back, and its -20 adjustment window lets a stop screw trim the 40 mm extend stroke down to 20 mm on site. The 12 mm bore delivers 56.5 N push and 42.4 N pull at 0.5 MPa, rising to 79.2 N push at 0.7 MPa, with a theoretical peak of 11.5 kgf at 1.0 MPa. The short ISO 21287-class body saves roughly 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, so it slots into tight jigs and guarding where a full-length body cannot. Note this model is discontinued; the current drop-in is ACEJ12X40 in the same bore, stroke and force class.
Because the -S magnet is fitted, CMSE or DMSE reed and solid-state switches can be clamped straight onto the body for end-of-stroke signalling. The male rod thread (B code) suits knuckle and tooling attachments, while the fixed TPU bumper at each end simply decelerates the piston at the ends of travel. As a rule of thumb, plan on about 34 N of usable push at 0.5 MPa (roughly 60% of the rating), which is enough to lift about 3 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin. Operating range is 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi) at 30-500 mm/s.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC ACP datasheet (now discontinued). The ACEJ12X40-20SB (ISO 21287) carries the same bore/stroke/force class; confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before installation. Rod type: female thread (blank) or male thread (B). Thread options: PT (blank) / G.
| Pressure | Push force | Pull force |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 MPa | 57 N | 42 N |
| 0.7 MPa | 79 N | 59 N |
| Max (@1.0 MPa) | 12 kgf | |
The ACEJ12X40-20SB produces the same force from the same bore. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical; size with a margin.
| ACPJ | DIN compact cylinder (adjustable-stroke, discontinued). |
|---|---|
| 12 | Bore size in mm. |
| ×40 | Stroke length in mm. |
| -20 | Adjustable stroke window (mm the extend stroke can be shortened on site). |
| S | Optional built-in magnet for sensor position sensing (omit for no magnet). |
| B | Rod type: B = male thread; blank = female thread. |
Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).
The 56.5 N push at 0.5 MPa clears light plastic or stamped parts from nests, and the 20-40 mm trim range lets technicians dial the eject travel to the nest depth without changing the cylinder.
With the -S magnet fitted, CMSE or DMSE switches report rod position to the PLC, so a bench-top electronics test station can verify the 40 mm clamp is fully made before the cycle continues.
About 3 kg of vertical lift capacity with a 2:1 margin suits raising a small sensor head or camera inside a tight gantry frame where the short body is the only thing that fits.
Size down only if your load is under about 34 N of real work; the 16 mm bore (100.5 N push at 0.5 MPa) is the step up if the 12 mm bore feels marginal. The 20 mm adjustment window means your final stroke can sit anywhere between 20 and 40 mm, but the stop screw only shortens travel - it never lengthens it past 40 mm and never locks the piston mid-stroke, so the rod will drift if air is lost. Confirm the FA/FB flange or LB foot option against your fixture, and remember the magnet is only present because this model carries the -S code. Since the ACPJ is discontinued, order ACEJ12X40 and verify the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before the swap.
Replacement checklist
At 0.5 MPa it pushes 56.5 N and pulls 42.4 N; at 0.7 MPa it pushes 79.2 N and pulls 59.4 N; theoretical maximum is 11.5 kgf at 1.0 MPa. The bore is 12 mm with a 6 mm rod, male rod thread, M5x0.8 port, adjustable extend stroke of 20-40 mm via the 20 mm window, speed 30-500 mm/s, and a fixed TPU bumper at both ends.
Order ACEJ12X40, the current-production ISO 21287 successor: swap the P for an E and you get the same 12 mm bore, 40 mm stroke and force class in a matching short body. Because the ACP is DIN-standard, confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions against your fixture before swapping. The ACEJ also accepts FA/FB flange and LB foot mounting, and the magnet remains an option via the -S code for CMSE / DMSE switches.
