This model is discontinued
AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ACEJ12X40-20 — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. Simply order the ACEJ12X40-20 in place of this model. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. Confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before ordering.

The AirTAC Airtac ACPJ Adjustable Compact Cylinder ACPJ12X40-20 is a double acting, adjustable stroke DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø12mm bore and 40mm stroke, M5×0.8 air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ACEJ12X40-20 (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
The ACPJ12X40-20 is a double acting compact cylinder with an adjustable extend stroke: the -20 code gives a 20 mm stop-screw window, so the 40 mm stroke can be trimmed on site anywhere between 20 and 40 mm. Air pushes the piston both ways, delivering 56.5 N forward and 42.4 N back at 0.5 MPa, rising to 79.2 N forward at 0.7 MPa. Its short ISO 21287-class body saves roughly 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, which is why it slots into slim jigs and guarded stations where a full-length body will not fit.
Practical sizing: plan on about 34 N of usable push at 0.5 MPa (roughly 60% of the rating), which lifts about 3 kg vertically - and about 1.5 kg with a 2:1 margin for a real part such as a small bracket or sensor head. The hard-anodized aluminium body carries an S45C hard-chrome rod with a female M3x0.5 thread, and fixed TPU bumpers decelerate both ends. Note this model is discontinued: the current drop-in is the ACEJ12X40 (swap the P for an E), so confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before ordering.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC ACP datasheet (now discontinued). The ACEJ12X40-20 (ISO 21287) carries the same bore/stroke/force class; confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before installation. Rod type: female thread (blank) or male thread (B). Thread options: PT (blank) / G.
| Pressure | Push force | Pull force |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 MPa | 57 N | 42 N |
| 0.7 MPa | 79 N | 59 N |
| Max (@1.0 MPa) | 12 kgf | |
The ACEJ12X40-20 produces the same force from the same bore. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical; size with a margin.
| ACPJ | DIN compact cylinder (adjustable-stroke, discontinued). |
|---|---|
| 12 | Bore size in mm. |
| ×40 | Stroke length in mm. |
| -20 | Adjustable stroke window (mm the extend stroke can be shortened on site). |
| S | Optional built-in magnet for sensor position sensing (omit for no magnet). |
| B | Rod type: B = male thread; blank = female thread. |
Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).
The 56.5 N push at 0.5 MPa is enough to tip a molded connector or stamped clip off a nest, and the 20-40 mm trim range lets the operator tune the eject travel without changing the cylinder.
A short probe stroke between 20 and 40 mm verifies a PCB or connector is seated; order the -S magnet version if CMSE or DMSE switch feedback is needed on the trimmed stroke.
With about 34 N of practical clamp force and a body roughly half the length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, it clamps thin sheet or small housings in tight fixture pockets.
At 12 mm bore this is the smallest force class in the family: 56.5 N push at 0.5 MPa. Step up to the 16 mm bore for 100.5 N push or the 20 mm bore for 157.1 N at the same pressure if the load is heavier. The stop screw only shortens the extend stroke and does not hold a load on air loss, so add an external stop if position must be retained. Mounting uses FA/FB flanges or LB feet on the standard face, and position sensing requires the optional -S magnet code with CMSE / DMSE switches - this version has no magnet fitted. For new designs, order the ACEJ12X40 instead.
Replacement checklist
Push is 56.5 N and pull is 42.4 N at 0.5 MPa; at 0.7 MPa push rises to 79.2 N and pull to 59.4 N, with a theoretical maximum of 11.5 kgf at 1.0 MPa. It is double acting with a 20 mm adjustment window on the 40 mm stroke, runs on air filtered to 40 um at 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi), proof pressure 1.5 MPa (215 psi), speed 30-500 mm/s, temperature -20 to +70 C, M5x0.8 ports and a female M3x0.5 rod thread. The model is discontinued; the ACEJ12X40 is the current replacement.
It is a short-body compact cylinder in the ISO 21287 class, saving about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, so it fits narrow jigs and guarded stations. The -20 stop screw trims the extend stroke anywhere from 20 to 40 mm; it is a mechanical end stop only and will not lock the piston if air is lost. Fixed TPU bumpers decelerate both ends of travel, and FA/FB flange or LB foot mounts bolt to the standard face. Confirm ISO 21287 dimensions before swapping to the ACEJ12X40.
