This model is discontinued
AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ACEJ12X40-40B — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. Simply order the ACEJ12X40-40B in place of this model. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. Confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before ordering.

The AirTAC Airtac ACPJ Adjustable Compact Cylinder ACPJ12X40-40B is a double acting, adjustable stroke DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø12mm bore and 40mm stroke, M5×0.8 air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ACEJ12X40-40B (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
Double acting and adjustable in stroke, the ACPJ12X40-40B is a discontinued DIN-standard compact cylinder with a 12 mm bore and 40 mm stroke. At 0.5 MPa it pushes 56.5 N and pulls 42.4 N, rising to 79.2 N push at 0.7 MPa, with a theoretical ceiling of 11.5 kgf at 1.0 MPa. A stop screw trims the extend stroke anywhere within the ordered 40 mm window, giving a usable range of 0-40 mm on site. Its short ISO 21287-class body saves roughly 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, so it slots into tight fixtures a full-length body cannot reach.
The male rod thread (B code) ends in a 6 mm rod, and air ports are M5x0.8. A fixed TPU bumper sits at both ends to soften end-of-travel contact only - it never holds or brakes a load, and on air loss the piston still drifts. Plan on about 34 N of real work at 0.5 MPa (roughly 60% of the push rating), which corresponds to lifting about 3 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin. This model is discontinued; the current-production drop-in is the ACEJ12X40, so confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping. The optional -S code adds the magnet for CMSE / DMSE switches - without it no sensor can be fitted.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC ACP datasheet (now discontinued). The ACEJ12X40-40B (ISO 21287) carries the same bore/stroke/force class; confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before installation. Rod type: female thread (blank) or male thread (B). Thread options: PT (blank) / G.
| Pressure | Push force | Pull force |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 MPa | 57 N | 42 N |
| 0.7 MPa | 79 N | 59 N |
| Max (@1.0 MPa) | 12 kgf | |
The ACEJ12X40-40B produces the same force from the same bore. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical; size with a margin.
| ACPJ | DIN compact cylinder (adjustable-stroke, discontinued). |
|---|---|
| 12 | Bore size in mm. |
| ×40 | Stroke length in mm. |
| -40 | Adjustable stroke window (mm the extend stroke can be shortened on site). |
| S | Optional built-in magnet for sensor position sensing (omit for no magnet). |
| B | Rod type: B = male thread; blank = female thread. |
Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).
The 0-40 mm adjustable extend stroke and 56.5 N push at 0.5 MPa suit nudging small machined or moulded parts off a nest on an automated bench.
With the optional -S magnet and CMSE / DMSE switches, the trimmed stroke acts as a go/no-go probe for connector or PCB presence in test rigs.
About 34 N of usable force at 0.5 MPa holds small housings during a screwdriving or labelling step where a full-size cylinder will not fit.
At 12 mm bore this is the smallest force class in the range: 56.5 N push at 0.5 MPa. If your load needs more, step up to the 16 mm bore (100.5 N push at 0.5 MPa) or the 20 mm bore (157.1 N). If 56.5 N is generous for the job, remember the 40 mm stop screw lets you dial the extend stroke down to almost zero, which is ideal for ejection or present/verify tasks with variable part heights. Mounting is via FA/FB flange or LB foot on the ISO 21287 face, and the B code gives a male rod thread for direct knuckle attachment. Since the ACPJ12X40-40B is discontinued, order the ACEJ12X40 as the current replacement and verify mounting dimensions against ISO 21287 before the swap.
Replacement checklist
Push is 56.5 N and pull 42.4 N at 0.5 MPa; at 0.7 MPa push is 79.2 N and pull 59.4 N, with a theoretical maximum of 11.5 kgf at 1.0 MPa. It is double acting with a 12 mm bore, 40 mm stroke trimmed by a 40 mm stop-screw window, M5x0.8 ports, male rod thread on a 6 mm rod, speed 30-500 mm/s, pressure 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi) and a fixed TPU bumper at each end.
Order the ACEJ12X40, the current-production ISO 21287 successor: swap the P for an E and you get the same bore, stroke and force class in a matching short body. Because the ACP is DIN-standard, confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping. Also note the magnet is not fitted on this unit - only the -S code version accepts CMSE / DMSE switches.
