This model is discontinued
AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ACEJ12X70-40SB — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. Simply order the ACEJ12X70-40SB in place of this model. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. Confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before ordering.

The AirTAC Airtac ACPJ Adjustable Compact Cylinder ACPJ12X70-40SB is a double acting, adjustable stroke DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø12mm bore and 70mm stroke, M5×0.8 air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ACEJ12X70-40SB (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
This is a double acting compact cylinder with an adjustable extend stroke, built on the DIN-standard ACPJ short body: hard-anodized aluminium with an S45C hard-chrome rod. The 12 mm bore delivers 56.5 N push and 42.4 N pull at 0.5 MPa (79.2 / 59.4 N at 0.7 MPa), and the -40 code gives a 40 mm adjustment window, so the stop screw trims the 70 mm extend stroke anywhere down to 30 mm on site. The 70 mm stroke exceeds the 50 mm standard maximum for bore 12, so it is a made-to-order length.
The short ISO 21287-class body saves roughly 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, which matters in slim fixtures and guarded cells. Because the -S magnet is fitted on this model, CMSE or DMSE reed and solid-state switches can be mounted directly on the body. Note the adjuster is a mechanical end stop only: on air loss the piston still drifts, so it never holds a load. This model is discontinued; the current-production replacement is the ACEJ12X70, so confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC ACP datasheet (now discontinued). The ACEJ12X70-40SB (ISO 21287) carries the same bore/stroke/force class; confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before installation. Rod type: female thread (blank) or male thread (B). Thread options: PT (blank) / G.
| Pressure | Push force | Pull force |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 MPa | 57 N | 42 N |
| 0.7 MPa | 79 N | 59 N |
| Max (@1.0 MPa) | 12 kgf | |
The ACEJ12X70-40SB produces the same force from the same bore. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical; size with a margin.
| ACPJ | DIN compact cylinder (adjustable-stroke, discontinued). |
|---|---|
| 12 | Bore size in mm. |
| ×70 | Stroke length in mm. |
| -40 | Adjustable stroke window (mm the extend stroke can be shortened on site). |
| S | Optional built-in magnet for sensor position sensing (omit for no magnet). |
| B | Rod type: B = male thread; blank = female thread. |
Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).
The 56.5 N push at 0.5 MPa is enough to strip light stamped clips off a die, and the 30-70 mm adjustable range lets one cylinder serve several die heights without re-plumbing.
With the fitted -S magnet, a CMSE switch signals full extension of the 6 mm rod, confirming a vial tray is fully presented before the dispensing head moves.
About 34 N of usable clamp force at 0.5 MPa holds a circuit board in a test nest, and the TPU bumpers keep the 30-500 mm/s motion quiet at both ends of the trimmed stroke.
At 12 mm bore you get 56.5 N push at 0.5 MPa, which supports roughly 34 N of real work once you plan for about 60% of the rating; that is a vertical lift of about 3 kg, halved to roughly 1.5 kg with a 2:1 margin. If the load is heavier, step up to the 16 mm bore (100.5 N push at 0.5 MPa) or the 20 mm bore (157.1 N); if you need less force, no smaller ACPJ bore exists, so consider the ACE range instead. The male rod thread (B code) suits external knuckle joints, and the 40 mm window suits stations where one cylinder must serve several product lengths. This model is discontinued - order the ACEJ12X70 as the current drop-in and verify the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions first.
Replacement checklist
At 0.5 MPa it pushes 56.5 N and pulls 42.4 N; at 0.7 MPa it pushes 79.2 N and pulls 59.4 N; theoretical maximum is 11.5 kgf at 1.0 MPa. The ordered stroke is 70 mm and the -40 window lets the stop screw trim the extend stroke down to 30 mm. The 70 mm stroke is a made-to-order length because the bore 12 standard maximum is 50 mm. Operating pressure is 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi) and speed is 30-500 mm/s.
The short-body build saves about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, so it fits tight jigs and guarded cells. It is double acting with a fixed TPU bumper at each end, a male rod thread and an M5x0.8 port. The ACPJ family is discontinued; the current-production replacement is the ACEJ12X70 in the same bore, stroke and force class - confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping.
