This model is discontinued
AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ACEJ16X120-20SB — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. Simply order the ACEJ16X120-20SB in place of this model. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. Confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before ordering.

The AirTAC Airtac ACPJ Adjustable Compact Cylinder ACPJ16X120-20SB is a double acting, adjustable stroke DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø16mm bore and 120mm stroke, M5×0.8 air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ACEJ16X120-20SB (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
Double acting and adjustable, the ACPJ16X120-20SB pushes 100.5 N and pulls 75.4 N at 0.5 MPa (140.7 N / 105.6 N at 0.7 MPa) from a 16 mm bore with a 120 mm stroke. A stop screw trims the extend stroke by up to 20 mm on site, giving a usable 100-120 mm range, and the fixed TPU bumper at each end decelerates the piston. The short ISO 21287-class body saves roughly 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, so it slots into tight jigs and guarding where a full-length body will not fit.
Because the 120 mm stroke exceeds the 75 mm maximum standard stroke for a 16 mm bore, this unit is made to order. The -S code on this model means the magnet is fitted, so CMSE / DMSE reed or solid-state switches can be mounted directly on the body, and the B code gives a male 8 mm rod thread. A practical sizing rule: at 0.5 MPa about 60 N of the push force does real work, which lifts roughly 6 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin. Note this model is discontinued; the current-production drop-in is ACEJ16X120, so confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC ACP datasheet (now discontinued). The ACEJ16X120-20SB (ISO 21287) carries the same bore/stroke/force class; confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before installation. Rod type: female thread (blank) or male thread (B). Thread options: PT (blank) / G.
| Pressure | Push force | Pull force |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 MPa | 101 N | 75 N |
| 0.7 MPa | 141 N | 106 N |
| Max (@1.0 MPa) | 21 kgf | |
The ACEJ16X120-20SB produces the same force from the same bore. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical; size with a margin.
| ACPJ | DIN compact cylinder (adjustable-stroke, discontinued). |
|---|---|
| 16 | Bore size in mm. |
| ×120 | Stroke length in mm. |
| -20 | Adjustable stroke window (mm the extend stroke can be shortened on site). |
| S | Optional built-in magnet for sensor position sensing (omit for no magnet). |
| B | Rod type: B = male thread; blank = female thread. |
Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).
The 100.5 N push at 0.5 MPa seats bearings, pins and bushings into aluminium housings on electronics assembly benches, with the 20 mm window letting you trim the 120 mm stroke to the exact press depth.
With the fitted -S magnet driving CMSE or DMSE switches, the cylinder confirms extend and retract on a PCB or connector leak-test station running at 30-500 mm/s.
Lifts about 6 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin, so it raises small trays or sensor heads inside compact machine frames where a full-length body cannot fit.
Size both ways before ordering: the 12 mm bore gives 56.5 N push at 0.5 MPa if your load is lighter, while the 20 mm bore delivers 157.1 N if you need more force at the same compact length. This 16 mm unit suits loads up to about 60 N of real work at 0.5 MPa. Remember the stop screw is a mechanical end stop for the extend stroke only - it is not a mid-stroke lock, and on air loss the piston still drifts, so add a separate valve or lock if you must hold position. FA/FB flange and LB foot mountings bolt to the standard ISO 21287 face. This model is discontinued; order ACEJ16X120 as the current replacement and verify mounting dimensions.
Replacement checklist
At 0.5 MPa it pushes 100.5 N and pulls 75.4 N; at 0.7 MPa it pushes 140.7 N and pulls 105.6 N; theoretical maximum is 20.5 kgf at 1.0 MPa. The -20 code is a 20 mm adjustment window: a stop screw shortens the 120 mm extend stroke by up to 20 mm, so the usable range is 100-120 mm. The stop is a mechanical end stop, not a load-holding brake. The 120 mm stroke is non-standard for this bore and made to order.
The short ISO 21287-class aluminium body saves about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, with M5x0.8 ports and FA/FB flange or LB foot mounting. This model carries the optional -S magnet, so CMSE / DMSE reed or solid-state switches mount directly on the body. The ACPJ is discontinued; the current drop-in is ACEJ16X120 - confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping.
