This model is discontinued
AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ACEJ16X120-40SB — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. Simply order the ACEJ16X120-40SB in place of this model. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. Confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before ordering.

The AirTAC Airtac ACPJ Adjustable Compact Cylinder ACPJ16X120-40SB is a double acting, adjustable stroke DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø16mm bore and 120mm stroke, M5×0.8 air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ACEJ16X120-40SB (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
This ACPJ16X120-40SB is a double acting compact cylinder with an adjustable extend stroke: an external stop screw trims the 120 mm stroke by up to 40 mm on site, giving a usable range of 80-120 mm. At 0.5 MPa the 16 mm bore delivers 100.5 N push and 75.4 N pull, rising to 140.7 N push at 0.7 MPa. The short ISO 21287-class body saves about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, so it slots into tight fixtures a full-length cylinder cannot reach.
The 120 mm stroke is above the 75 mm standard maximum for bore 16, so this unit is made to order. The male rod thread (B code) suits knuckle and tooling plates that bolt directly to the rod, and the fitted -S magnet lets you mount CMSE or DMSE switches for end-of-stroke signalling. Plan on roughly 60 N (about 6 kg) of real work at 0.5 MPa instead of the full 100.5 N rating, which lifts about 5 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin. Note: this model is discontinued; the current-production replacement is ACEJ16X120 - confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC ACP datasheet (now discontinued). The ACEJ16X120-40SB (ISO 21287) carries the same bore/stroke/force class; confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before installation. Rod type: female thread (blank) or male thread (B). Thread options: PT (blank) / G.
| Pressure | Push force | Pull force |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 MPa | 101 N | 75 N |
| 0.7 MPa | 141 N | 106 N |
| Max (@1.0 MPa) | 21 kgf | |
The ACEJ16X120-40SB produces the same force from the same bore. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical; size with a margin.
| ACPJ | DIN compact cylinder (adjustable-stroke, discontinued). |
|---|---|
| 16 | Bore size in mm. |
| ×120 | Stroke length in mm. |
| -40 | Adjustable stroke window (mm the extend stroke can be shortened on site). |
| S | Optional built-in magnet for sensor position sensing (omit for no magnet). |
| B | Rod type: B = male thread; blank = female thread. |
Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).
The 100.5 N push at 0.5 MPa seats bearings, pins and bushings into aluminium housings on electronics assembly benches, with the 80-120 mm window tuned to each part.
A 120 mm stroke with a male-thread rod carries a pusher paddle that kicks off-spec cartons from a conveyor lane; the fitted magnet and CMSE switch confirm each push completed.
About 60 N of usable clamp force at 0.5 MPa holds vials or test coupons in automated inspection rigs where the short body must fit inside a compact guard.
Size the bore both ways: if 100.5 N push at 0.5 MPa is more than your jig needs, the ACPJ12 gives 56.5 N; if you need headroom, the ACPJ20 reaches 157.1 N. The 40 mm window suits machines where the final extend position is tuned during commissioning. Remember the stop screw only shortens the extend stroke - it is a mechanical end stop, not a mid-stroke lock, so the rod still drifts if air is lost. FA/FB flanges and LB feet bolt to the standard face. This model is discontinued; order ACEJ16X120 as the drop-in successor and verify ISO 21287 mounting dimensions first.
Replacement checklist
Push 100.5 N and pull 75.4 N at 0.5 MPa; push 140.7 N and pull 105.6 N at 0.7 MPa; theoretical maximum 20.5 kgf at 1.0 MPa. Operating pressure is 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi), proof 1.5 MPa (215 psi), speed 30-500 mm/s, temperature -20 to +70 C, air filtered to 40 um. Port is M5x0.8, rod is 8 mm with a male thread, and the -40 code gives a 40 mm extend-stroke adjustment window (80-120 mm usable).
Bore 16 tops out at 75 mm as a standard stroke, so 120 mm is a made-to-order build. The ACPJ family itself is discontinued; the current-production replacement is ACEJ16X120, which matches the same bore, stroke and force class in the ISO 21287 short-body format. Confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions against your fixture before swapping, and order the -S code on the ACE if you need the magnet for CMSE / DMSE switches.
