This model is discontinued
AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ACEJ16X40-20SB — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. Simply order the ACEJ16X40-20SB in place of this model. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. Confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before ordering.

The AirTAC Airtac ACPJ Adjustable Compact Cylinder ACPJ16X40-20SB is a double acting, adjustable stroke DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø16mm bore and 40mm stroke, M5×0.8 air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ACEJ16X40-20SB (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
The ACPJ16X40-20SB is a double acting compact cylinder with an adjustable extend stroke: a stop screw trims the 40 mm stroke by up to 20 mm, giving a usable range of 20-40 mm on site. At 0.5 MPa it pushes 100.5 N and pulls 75.4 N; at 0.7 MPa those rise to 140.7 N and 105.6 N, with a theoretical maximum of 20.5 kgf at 1.0 MPa. The B code gives a male rod thread on the 8 mm rod, and the S code means the optional -S magnet is fitted, so CMSE / DMSE reed or solid-state switches can be mounted directly on the hard-anodized aluminium body.
As a short-body ISO 21287 class cylinder it saves roughly 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, which is why it slots into tight jigs and guarding where a full-length body will not fit. For sizing, treat about 60 N (0.6 x the 100.5 N push) as the realistic working force at 0.5 MPa, enough to lift roughly 5 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin. Note that the fixed TPU bumpers at each end only soften the stroke ends - they never lock or hold a load, and on air loss the piston drifts. This model is discontinued; the current-production drop-in is the ACEJ16X40, so confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC ACP datasheet (now discontinued). The ACEJ16X40-20SB (ISO 21287) carries the same bore/stroke/force class; confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before installation. Rod type: female thread (blank) or male thread (B). Thread options: PT (blank) / G.
| Pressure | Push force | Pull force |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 MPa | 101 N | 75 N |
| 0.7 MPa | 141 N | 106 N |
| Max (@1.0 MPa) | 21 kgf | |
The ACEJ16X40-20SB produces the same force from the same bore. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical; size with a margin.
| ACPJ | DIN compact cylinder (adjustable-stroke, discontinued). |
|---|---|
| 16 | Bore size in mm. |
| ×40 | Stroke length in mm. |
| -20 | Adjustable stroke window (mm the extend stroke can be shortened on site). |
| S | Optional built-in magnet for sensor position sensing (omit for no magnet). |
| B | Rod type: B = male thread; blank = female thread. |
Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).
With 100.5 N push at 0.5 MPa and a 20-40 mm trimmed stroke, the cylinder kicks finished pins or bushings off a CNC jig without disturbing the fixture footprint.
The fitted -S magnet drives CMSE / DMSE switches so a PLC can confirm the rod is fully extended before a leak or electrical test starts.
About 60 N of realistic working force holds a lightweight gauge cover closed inside guarding too tight for an ISO 15552 profile cylinder.
Bore 16 sits mid-range: bore 12 delivers 56.5 N push at 0.5 MPa for lighter clamping, while bore 20 reaches 157.1 N when the load needs more margin. If your fixture relies on holding position mid-stroke, remember the -20 adjuster is a mechanical end stop only, not a brake. This version carries the male rod thread (B) and the fitted -S magnet for CMSE / DMSE switches; FA/FB flange and LB foot mounts bolt to the standard face. Since the ACPJ is discontinued, order the ACEJ16X40 as the current replacement and verify the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions against your fixture.
Replacement checklist
At 0.5 MPa it pushes 100.5 N and pulls 75.4 N; at 0.7 MPa it pushes 140.7 N and pulls 105.6 N; the theoretical maximum is 20.5 kgf at 1.0 MPa. In practice plan on about 60 N of usable push at 0.5 MPa, which lifts roughly 5 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin. Operating pressure is 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi), proof pressure 1.5 MPa (215 psi), and speed 30-500 mm/s.
The -20 code is a 20 mm adjustment window: an external stop screw shortens the extend stroke anywhere within 20-40 mm, but it cannot lengthen the stroke past the ordered 40 mm, and it is not a mid-stroke lock. The body is a hard-anodized aluminium compact build with a fixed TPU bumper at both ends, M5x0.8 ports and FA/FB or LB mounting options. The ACPJ family is discontinued - the current drop-in is the ACEJ16X40 in the same bore, stroke and force class, so confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before you swap.
