This model is discontinued
AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ACEJ16X40-30SB — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. Simply order the ACEJ16X40-30SB in place of this model. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. Confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before ordering.

The AirTAC Airtac ACPJ Adjustable Compact Cylinder ACPJ16X40-30SB is a double acting, adjustable stroke DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø16mm bore and 40mm stroke, M5×0.8 air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ACEJ16X40-30SB (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
The ACPJ16X40-30SB is a double acting compact cylinder with an adjustable extend stroke: the -30 stop screw trims the 40 mm stroke by up to 30 mm on site, giving a usable range of 10-40 mm. At 0.5 MPa it pushes 100.5 N and pulls 75.4 N, rising to 140.7 N at 0.7 MPa, with a theoretical peak of 20.5 kgf at 1.0 MPa. The male (B code) rod thread and M5x0.8 ports suit small clamping fixtures. Note: this ACPJ series is discontinued - the current drop-in is the ACEJ16X40.
The short ISO 21287-class body saves roughly 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, so it slots into tight jig plates and guarding where a full-length body cannot. Because the S code is ordered, the magnet is fitted, so CMSE or DMSE reed and solid-state switches mount directly on the hard-anodized aluminium body. Plan on about 60 N (roughly 6 kg of vertical lift) of practical work at 0.5 MPa rather than the full rating. Operating range is 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi), speed 30-500 mm/s, with a fixed TPU bumper at each end and an S45C hard-chrome rod.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC ACP datasheet (now discontinued). The ACEJ16X40-30SB (ISO 21287) carries the same bore/stroke/force class; confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before installation. Rod type: female thread (blank) or male thread (B). Thread options: PT (blank) / G.
| Pressure | Push force | Pull force |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 MPa | 101 N | 75 N |
| 0.7 MPa | 141 N | 106 N |
| Max (@1.0 MPa) | 21 kgf | |
The ACEJ16X40-30SB produces the same force from the same bore. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical; size with a margin.
| ACPJ | DIN compact cylinder (adjustable-stroke, discontinued). |
|---|---|
| 16 | Bore size in mm. |
| ×40 | Stroke length in mm. |
| -30 | Adjustable stroke window (mm the extend stroke can be shortened on site). |
| S | Optional built-in magnet for sensor position sensing (omit for no magnet). |
| B | Rod type: B = male thread; blank = female thread. |
Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).
Seating dowel pins or bushings into aluminium housings on an electronics assembly bench, where the 100.5 N push at 0.5 MPa is enough and the 10-40 mm trim range lets one cylinder serve several part heights.
Because the -S magnet is fitted, CMSE or DMSE switches confirm the clamped position on a leak-test fixture, with the stop screw set so the 40 mm stroke lands exactly on the seal face.
Kicking finished brackets off a drilling jig where the short body fits under the drill head - about 50% shorter than an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, with the male rod thread driving a knuckle on the ejector pin.
Size up or down by force: the 12 mm bore gives 56.5 N push at 0.5 MPa, while the 20 mm bore reaches 157.1 N - pick the 16 mm when 100.5 N at 0.5 MPa covers the job with margin. The 40 mm stroke sits inside the 75 mm maximum standard stroke for this bore, so no made-to-order build is needed. FA/FB flanges and LB feet bolt to the same mounting family, and the male rod thread takes I/Y knuckles directly. The stop screw shortens the extend stroke only - it is not a mid-stroke lock, so the rod can drift if air is lost. For new projects, order the ACEJ16X40 and confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before the swap.
Replacement checklist
At 0.5 MPa: 100.5 N push and 75.4 N pull. At 0.7 MPa: 140.7 N push and 105.6 N pull. Theoretical maximum is 20.5 kgf at 1.0 MPa. As a rule of thumb, plan on about 60 N of usable push at 0.5 MPa - roughly 6 kg of vertical lift with a sensible margin. Operating pressure is 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi) and speed is 30-500 mm/s.
The -30 code is a 30 mm window: an external stop screw shortens the 40 mm extend stroke on site, so the working range is 10-40 mm. It cannot lengthen the stroke past 40 mm, and it is a mechanical end stop only - on air loss the piston still drifts. The ACPJ series is discontinued; the current-production replacement is the ACEJ16X40 in the same bore, stroke and force class. Confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping, since the ACP is DIN-standard.
