This model is discontinued
AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ACEJ16X40-40 — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. Simply order the ACEJ16X40-40 in place of this model. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. Confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before ordering.

The AirTAC Airtac ACPJ Adjustable Compact Cylinder ACPJ16X40-40 is a double acting, adjustable stroke DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø16mm bore and 40mm stroke, M5×0.8 air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ACEJ16X40-40 (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
This is a double acting adjustable-stroke compact cylinder (now discontinued) with a 16 mm bore and 40 mm stroke. The -40 code gives a 40 mm adjustment window: an external stop screw trims the extend stroke anywhere from 0 to 40 mm on site, so one cylinder covers several jig positions. At 0.5 MPa it pushes with 100.5 N and pulls with 75.4 N; at 0.7 MPa those figures rise to 140.7 N and 105.6 N. As a rule of thumb, plan on about 60 N of real work at 0.5 MPa, which lifts roughly 5 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin.
The short ISO 21287-class body saves about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, so it slots into tight fixtures and guarding. A hard-anodized aluminium body carries an S45C hard-chrome rod, fixed TPU bumpers sit at both ends, and the rod ends in a female M4x0.7 thread. Air supply is 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi), speed 30-500 mm/s, and the port is M5x0.8. Note the stop screw sets the end of travel only - it is not a mid-stroke lock, so the piston still drifts if air is lost. This model is discontinued; the current-production drop-in is the ACEJ16X40, so confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC ACP datasheet (now discontinued). The ACEJ16X40-40 (ISO 21287) carries the same bore/stroke/force class; confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before installation. Rod type: female thread (blank) or male thread (B). Thread options: PT (blank) / G.
| Pressure | Push force | Pull force |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 MPa | 101 N | 75 N |
| 0.7 MPa | 141 N | 106 N |
| Max (@1.0 MPa) | 21 kgf | |
The ACEJ16X40-40 produces the same force from the same bore. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical; size with a margin.
| ACPJ | DIN compact cylinder (adjustable-stroke, discontinued). |
|---|---|
| 16 | Bore size in mm. |
| ×40 | Stroke length in mm. |
| -40 | Adjustable stroke window (mm the extend stroke can be shortened on site). |
| S | Optional built-in magnet for sensor position sensing (omit for no magnet). |
| B | Rod type: B = male thread; blank = female thread. |
Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).
The 40 mm adjustable window lets a mold setter trim the eject stroke per cavity, with 100.5 N at 0.5 MPa enough to clear lightweight molded parts.
A stop screw set anywhere in the 0-40 mm range positions fixtures on a rotary indexing table, and the short body fits under the dial.
About 60 N of usable force at 0.5 MPa presses test coupons or sensors into holders, with the M5x0.8 port keeping tubing compact.
At 100.5 N push at 0.5 MPa, the 16 mm bore suits light clamping and part-presenting duties; step down to the 12 mm bore (56.5 N) for smaller loads or up to the 20 mm bore (157.1 N) when more force is needed. The 40 mm stroke sits inside the 75 mm maximum standard stroke for this bore, so no made-to-order build is required. Order the -S code if you want the optional magnet for CMSE / DMSE switches - without it no sensor can be fitted. FA/FB flange and LB foot mountings bolt to the standard face. Since this unit is discontinued, specify the ACEJ16X40 as the current replacement and verify the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions.
Replacement checklist
At 0.5 MPa it pushes 100.5 N and pulls 75.4 N; at 0.7 MPa it pushes 140.7 N and pulls 105.6 N; theoretical maximum is 20.5 kgf at 1.0 MPa. The -40 code is a 40 mm adjustment window: an external stop screw shortens the 40 mm extend stroke anywhere down to 0 mm. The stop sets end of travel only - it does not hold a load if air is lost.
It is a short-body compact cylinder whose mounting length is about 50% less than an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, with a hard-anodized aluminium body, S45C hard-chrome rod, fixed TPU bumpers at both ends and an M5x0.8 port. Position sensing needs the optional -S magnet with CMSE / DMSE switches. The model is discontinued; the current drop-in is the ACEJ16X40 - confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping.
