AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ASE12X5B — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. The AirTAC Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP12X5B is a single acting, push (spring return) DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø12mm bore and 5mm stroke, M5×0.8 air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ASE12X5B (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
The ASP12X5B is a single acting push cylinder with spring return: air extends the 6 mm rod and the internal spring retracts it, so only one air line is needed. This 12 mm bore delivers 40 N of push at 0.5 MPa (62.7 N at 0.7 MPa), already net of the spring, and it needs just 0.2 MPa to overcome the spring and start moving. It is discontinued - order the ASE12X5, the current ISO 21287 successor in the same bore, stroke and force class.
The short ISO 21287 body saves roughly 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, which is why this size fits inside slim test fixtures and micro-assembly heads. Because the 40 N push at 0.5 MPa equals about 4 kgf, plan on roughly 2 kg of vertical lift with a 2:1 margin. The B code gives a male rod thread and a PT port; the -S magnet for CMSE / DMSE switches is optional and not fitted on this code.

In an electronics assembly head, the short body probes whether a connector is seated; order the -S magnet version to add a CMSE or DMSE switch for a go / no-go signal.
At about half the installed length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, this 12 mm unit clamps small PCB brackets inside a compact jig where a full-length body will not fit.
At 40 N push at 0.5 MPa this bore suits light ejection and part-present tasks; step up to the 16 mm bore (78.4 N at 0.5 MPa) if the load creeps up, or down to nothing smaller since 12 mm is the smallest in the family. Remember the spring returns the rod home on air loss - it will not hold a mid-stroke position. Match LB foot or FA/FB flange brackets to your fixture, add the -S code only if you need CMSE / DMSE sensing, and confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping to the ASE12X5.
