AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ASE16X10SB — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. The AirTAC Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP16X10SB is a single acting, push (spring return) DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø16mm bore and 10mm stroke, M5×0.8 air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ASE16X10SB (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
This single acting push cylinder extends its 8 mm rod with compressed air and lets an internal return spring retract it, so only one air line is needed. At the 16 mm bore it delivers 78.4 N of push at 0.5 MPa (118.6 N at 0.7 MPa), already net of the spring, and it starts moving from just 0.2 MPa. The short ISO 21287-class body saves roughly 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, which is why it slots into slim test fixtures and small assembly heads where a full-length body will not fit.
In practice, plan on about 47 N of usable work at 0.5 MPa rather than the full rating, which corresponds to lifting roughly 4 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin - enough for light clamping of small brackets or ejecting tiny parts. The hard-anodized aluminium body carries a fixed TPU bumper at each end, the S45C rod ends in a male thread (the B code), and the -S magnet fitted to this unit accepts CMSE / DMSE switches. Note the ASP family is discontinued; the current-production replacement is ASE16X10, so confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping.

The 78.4 N push at 0.5 MPa seats snap-fit clips onto automotive sensor brackets in a 10 mm working window, with the spring clearing the nest between cycles.

On a small carton sealing station, the short body tucks under the guard rail and presses flaps down before taping, lifting about 4 kg equivalent vertically with margin.
Size up if 78.4 N at 0.5 MPa is marginal: the 20 mm bore gives 127.4 N and the 25 mm bore 210.1 N at the same pressure. Size down to the 12 mm bore (40 N) only for very light ejection tasks. Because the spring drives the rod home on air loss, this cylinder returns to the retracted position rather than holding a mid-stroke pose. This SB version has the male rod thread and the -S magnet for CMSE / DMSE sensing; FA/FB flange, LB foot and CA/CB clevis mounts are available. For new designs, order the ASE16X10 instead, as the ASP is discontinued.
Replacement checklist
Push force is 78.4 N at 0.5 MPa and 118.6 N at 0.7 MPa, both already net of the return spring. Operating pressure is 0.2-1.0 MPa (28-145 psi) with a 1.5 MPa (215 psi) proof pressure, speed is 50-500 mm/s, temperature -20 to +70 C, and the air supply must be filtered to 40 um. The short-body build saves about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, so it fits tight jigs and guards. This SB model carries the optional -S magnet, so CMSE or DMSE reed and solid-state switches can be clipped on for end-of-stroke signals. A fixed TPU bumper at each end decelerates the rod. The ASP is discontinued; the drop-in successor is ASE16X10 - confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before converting.
