AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ASE16X5 — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. Simply order the ASE16X5 in place of this model. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. The AirTAC Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP16X5 is a single acting, push (spring return) DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø16mm bore and 5mm stroke, M5×0.8 air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ASE16X5 (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
This is a single acting push cylinder with spring return: air extends the 8 mm rod and the internal spring retracts it, so only one air line is needed and it rests retracted when pressure drops. The 16 mm bore delivers 78.4 N of push at 0.5 MPa (118.6 N at 0.7 MPa), already net of the spring, and it starts moving from just 0.2 MPa. Note this model is discontinued; the current-production successor is the ASE16X5, which swaps the P for an E in the same bore, stroke and force class.
The short ISO 21287-class body saves about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, so it slots into slim fixtures and covers where a full-length body will not fit. For sizing, treat roughly 47 N (about 0.6 of the 0.5 MPa rating) as the usable working force, which lifts about 4 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin. The magnet is not fitted on this code; order the optional -S version if you need CMSE or DMSE switch sensing. Confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping to the ASE16X5.

Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).
The 78.4 N push at 0.5 MPa clears a finished connector or sensor cap out of a pick nest on an electronics assembly cell, and the spring retracts the 8 mm rod the moment air is vented.
A 5 mm stroke is ideal for pressing a contact pin or ID tag into place on a PCB test jig, where the short body fits under the fixture plate and 47 N of usable force avoids damaging the board.
On small tabletop packaging machines, the cylinder pushes a latch or tilts a light gate shut; the spring return gives a fail-safe retracted state if the 0.2-1.0 MPa (28-145 psi) supply drops.
At 78.4 N push at 0.5 MPa, this 16 mm bore suits light ejection and clamping. Step down to a 12 mm bore (40 N) for gentler spring-return nudges, or up to 20 mm (127.4 N) if the load creeps toward 50-70 N. Remember the spring always returns the rod home on air loss, so it cannot hold a mid-stroke position. This code has a female M4x0.7 rod thread and PT ports; FA/FB flange, LB foot and CA/CB clevis mounts are available, and the optional -S magnet enables CMSE/DMSE switches. For new projects, specify the ASE16X5 instead.
Replacement checklist
At 0.5 MPa the net push is 78.4 N, rising to 118.6 N at 0.7 MPa; both figures are already net of the return spring. Minimum working pressure is 0.2 MPa, proof pressure is 1.5 MPa (215 psi), speed range is 50-500 mm/s, and the bore takes an M5x0.8 port with a female M4x0.7 rod thread. Plan on about 47 N of real work at 0.5 MPa, roughly a 4 kg vertical lift with margin.
AirTAC no longer produces the ASP family. The drop-in successor is the ASE16X5 (swap the P for an E), an ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same 16 mm bore, 5 mm stroke and force class. Because the ASP was built to a DIN-standard compact pattern, confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions against your fixture before swapping. If you need sensing, order the -S code so the optional magnet is fitted for CMSE or DMSE switches.
