The AirTAC Airtac ATE Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ATE40X5B is a genuine single acting, pull (spring return) ISO 21287 compact air cylinder with a Ø40mm bore and 5mm stroke, 1/8" air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. Its short compact envelope saves about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder.
This is a single acting pull cylinder in the AirTAC ATE range: a return spring holds the rod extended and compressed air at 0.2 MPa or more retracts it, so the ATE40X5B fails to its extended home position whenever air is lost. At the standard 0.5 MPa supply it pulls 500.3 N net of the spring (729 N at 0.7 MPa), which suits short 5 mm retract motions on clamping and gating points where a full-length body would never fit. The ISO 21287 compact body saves about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, and the hard-anodized aluminium bore with an S45C hard-chrome-plated 12 mm rod stands up to continuous cycling.
Plan on roughly 300 N of real work at 0.5 MPa (about 0.6 of the rated pull) to keep a margin for seal drag and spring variation; that is enough to retract a latch, kick a part off a nest or toggle a small clamp. In vertical terms the rod can lift about 25 kg with a 2:1 margin. The 5 mm stroke is a standard length for this bore, the port is 1/8" PT, and the B code gives a male rod thread. Speed range is 50-500 mm/s with fixed TPU bumpers at both ends.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC ACE-series (ISO 21287) datasheet. Body: hard-anodized aluminium alloy; piston rod: S45C carbon steel with hard-chrome plating. Rod type: female thread (blank) or male thread (B). Thread options: PT (blank) / G. A built-in magnet is OPTIONAL — add the -S code to fit CMSE / DMSE position sensors.
| Pressure | Pull force (spring return) |
|---|---|
| 0.5 MPa | 500.3 N |
| 0.7 MPa | 729.0 N |
Single-acting pull: the spring extends the rod; air retracts it. Forces already net the spring; minimum working pressure is 0.2 MPa. Single-acting strokes are short (Ø12 to 10 mm, Ø16-100 to 25 mm).
| ATE | ISO 21287 compact cylinder (single-acting pull, spring-return). |

| 40 | Bore size in mm. |
| ×5 | Stroke length in mm. |
| S | Optional built-in magnet for CMSE / DMSE sensors (omit for no magnet). |
| B | Rod type: B = male thread; blank = female thread. |
ACE-family variants: ACE (double acting), ASE / ATE (single acting push / pull), ACED (double rod), ACEJ (adjustable stroke), TACE / TACED (non-rotating twin-guide yoke). Mounting accessories: FA / FB flange, LB foot, CA / CB clevis, CR, SDB pivot, FTC; plus I and Y knuckles. Thread PT (blank) / G.
On a packaging machine guard, the spring keeps the latch engaged and a 0.2 MPa air signal retracts it 5 mm to release the door - fail-safe extended by design.
A 500.3 N pull at 0.5 MPa (about 300 N usable) is ample to flick a small machined boss or stamped clip out of an assembly nest on the retract stroke.
In a jig or fixture, the normally-extended rod holds a clamp plate closed and air pulls it open 5 mm for part changeover, dropping open automatically if supply fails.
Size down to an ATE32X25 (296 N pull at 0.5 MPa) if the load is lighter and a 25 mm stroke is acceptable, or up to an ATE50X25 (775 N at 0.5 MPa) when the retract force must rise. Remember the spring does not hold a mid-stroke position: on air loss the rod returns to extended. Bolt the body on with FA/FB flange, LB foot, CA/CB clevis, CR, SDB pivot or FTC brackets, and pair the rod with an I or Y knuckle. This unit has no magnet; order the ATE40X5SB variant with the optional -S magnet if you need CMSE or DMSE switch feedback.
Quick checklist
Single acting pull, spring return: the spring extends the rod, air retracts it. Pull is 500.3 N at 0.5 MPa and 729 N at 0.7 MPa, both net of the return spring. Operating pressure is 0.2-1.0 MPa (28-145 psi), proof 1.5 MPa (215 psi), speed 50-500 mm/s, temperature -20 to +70 C, air filtered to 40 um. Bore 40 mm, stroke 5 mm, 12 mm rod with male thread (B code), 1/8" PT port.
The ISO 21287 short body saves about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, so it fits tight guards and gantries. A fixed TPU bumper at each end absorbs end-of-stroke energy. Sensing is not fitted on this model: order the -S magnet code (ATE40X5SB) to enable CMSE or DMSE switches on the body's magnet slots.
