This is a single acting pull cylinder in the AirTAC ATE range: a return spring holds the rod extended and compressed air at 0.2 MPa or more retracts it, so the ATE40X5B fails to its extended home position whenever air is lost. At the standard 0.5 MPa supply it pulls 500.3 N net of the spring (729 N at 0.7 MPa), which suits short 5 mm retract motions on clamping and gating points where a full-length body would never fit. The ISO 21287 compact body saves about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, and the hard-anodized aluminium bore with an S45C hard-chrome-plated 12 mm rod stands up to continuous cycling.
Plan on roughly 300 N of real work at 0.5 MPa (about 0.6 of the rated pull) to keep a margin for seal drag and spring variation; that is enough to retract a latch, kick a part off a nest or toggle a small clamp. Size down to an ATE32X25 (296 N pull at 0.5 MPa) if the load is lighter and a 25 mm stroke is acceptable, or up to an ATE50X25 (775 N at 0.5 MPa) when the retract force must rise. Remember the spring does not hold a mid-stroke position: on air loss the rod returns to extended.
