About the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X160

The AirTAC BSAI100X160 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the piston rod at any position along its 160 mm travel, delivering a robust static holding force of 5500 N. Operating strictly within 0.15-0.7 MPa, the cylinder generates a practical maximum push thrust of 5497 N. Buyers must distinguish this holding force from the thrust: the 5500 N rating is the clamp's static grip on the rod to prevent drift, entirely separate from the pneumatic push force that moves the load.

This enclasp mechanism is bidirectional, locking whether the rod was extending or retracting. It activates only after the cylinder has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving rod. The clamp utilizes a dedicated G1/8 enclasp port and requires balanced air pressure on both sides of the piston to unlock safely, preventing abrupt rod jumps. Furthermore, the variable air cushion at the stroke ends only decelerates the piston; it does not hold the load. The clamp head performs the holding.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Push/pull as tabulated. Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (5500 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X160 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Hold

Prevents gravity-induced drift on vertical lifts by clamping the rod securely at any height with 5500 N of holding force.

shield

Power Loss Safety

Spring-applied enclasp mechanism immediately secures the load exactly where it stopped when air pressure drops.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Holds the workpiece rigidly at a specific intermediate stroke position for precise milling or inspection operations.

Is the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X160 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Select this 100 mm bore model when an application requires substantial thrust (5497 N at 0.7 MPa) combined with mid-stroke positioning. If your load is lighter, stepping down to a 63 mm bore offers 2182 N thrust and a 2200 N hold, whereas heavier loads might require the 125 mm bore with 8590 N thrust and an 8600 N hold. Choose this BSAI over a SAIL variant when you need the rod locked at any point in the travel, not just at the stroke end. If power-off holding is unnecessary, a plain SAI cylinder suffices.

For replacements, match the 100 mm bore, 160 mm stroke, and PT port threads. The 25 mm rod and M20x1.5 thread provide high side-load capacity. Mounting options include Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. As this unit lacks the -S magnet, it cannot use CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors. Always ensure the rod stops before locking and balanced pressure is applied before unlocking; safety-critical loads need an independent external measure.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X160 FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 5500 N. It locks the rod at any position bidirectionally, but only after the cylinder has stopped moving.

The clamp unlocks via a G1/8 enclasp port at 0.15-0.7 MPa. You must balance air pressure on both sides of the piston before unlocking, or the rod may jump. It is not a moving-rod brake.
