About the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X250

The AirTAC BSAI100X250 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock that grips the 25 mm carbon steel rod at any position along its 250 mm stroke. It delivers a static holding force of 5500 N, while the cylinder itself generates a push thrust of 5497 N at 0.7 MPa. It is vital to distinguish between these two quantities: the clamp holding force resists the external static load, whereas the thrust drives the motion. You must size the holding force against your payload, not the thrust.

This mechanism locks bidirectionally after the piston has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving rod. Unlocking requires balanced air pressure on both sides of the piston via the dedicated G1/8 enclasp port, preventing abrupt rod jumps upon release. Furthermore, the variable air cushions only decelerate the piston near stroke ends; the clamp is the sole device responsible for maintaining the hold. Without a magnet specified, this unit does not support CMSE or DMSE position sensing.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø100mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa3927 N3682 N
0.7 MPa (max)5498 N

Push/pull as tabulated. Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (5500 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X250 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Holding

Secures heavy vertical loads at any point in the 250 mm travel, preventing drops during power loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Clamps a workpiece firmly in place during drilling or milling operations without relying on air pressure.

shield

Emergency Safety Hold

Acts as a fail-safe grip that engages instantly when the cylinder stops, requiring an independent measure for human safety.

Is the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X250 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 100 mm bore when an application requires substantial mid-stroke positioning, offering 3927 N push thrust at 0.5 MPa and a 5500 N holding capacity. If your load is lighter, stepping down to the 80 mm bore provides 2513 N thrust and a 3600 N hold, whereas heavier payloads might require the 125 mm bore with 6136 N thrust and an 8600 N hold. Select this BSAI model over a SAIL cylinder when you need to secure the load anywhere in the travel rather than only at the stroke end; a plain SAI suffices if no lock is necessary. Because this is a single-rod design, it accepts Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts. The PT ported cylinder uses a 1/2 thread for the main air supply and G1/8 for the unlock port. Since the stroke is 250 mm, the robust 25 mm rod thread handles side loads well, though external guidance is recommended for unsupported lengths.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X250 FAQ

The BSAI100X250 provides a static holding force of 5500 N. The spring-applied, air-released clamp locks the rod bidirectionally at any position, but only after the cylinder has stopped moving.

You must apply balanced air pressure to both sides of the piston through the cylinder ports before supplying air to the G1/8 enclasp port. This prevents the rod from jumping abruptly upon release.
