About the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X500

The AirTAC BSAI100X500 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It provides a robust 3927 N push thrust at 0.5 MPa (5497 N at 0.7 MPa) and securely holds the load at any position along its 500 mm stroke with a static holding force of 5500 N. A critical distinction exists between these two figures: the clamp holding force is a separate static rating from the cylinder's pneumatic thrust, meaning you must size the holding force against your static load, not the push thrust.

This enclasp mechanism operates bidirectionally and engages only after the piston has come to a complete stop; it cannot brake a moving rod. It relies on a third G1/8 unlock port, requiring 0.15-0.7 MPa of air pressure to release the grip. The standard carbon steel rod features an M20x1.5 thread, and the variable air cushions at both ends decelerate the piston near stroke end, though the cushion is never the device holding the load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Push/pull as tabulated. Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (5500 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X500 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Pauses and securely holds heavy vertical lifting stages at any intermediate height using its 5500 N static holding force without requiring continuous live air pressure.

shield

Emergency Drop Prevention

Engages the spring-applied clamp automatically upon loss of air pressure to freeze the carbon steel rod in place, preventing uncontrolled descent of heavy workpieces.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Freeze

Locks the 500 mm stroke rigidly at the exact machining coordinate to absorb cutting vibrations and maintain dimensional accuracy during metalworking.

Is the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X500 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 100 mm bore when a 50 mm bore (982 N thrust, 1400 N holding force) is insufficient for heavy vertical loads, but before stepping up to a 125 mm bore (6136 N thrust, 8600 N holding force). Select the BSAI clamp-lock over a SAIL model when you need to lock at any intermediate position rather than just at the stroke end, or choose a plain SAI if no position holding is required. Because this is a 500 mm stroke, an external guide is recommended to manage side loads on the M20x1.5 rod.

For safe operation, the clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped and must be unlocked with balanced pressures on both sides of the piston to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly. Safety-critical applications require an additional independent safety measure. To replace this unit, match the single-rod design, 100 mm bore, 500 mm stroke, PT tapered ports, and the correct mounting set (Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, TCM1, TCM2). As no magnet is specified, position sensing via CMSE or DMSE switches is not supported without modification.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load

Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X500 FAQ

The BSAI100X500 features a static holding force of 5500 N. This bidirectional clamp locks the rod at any position along the 500 mm stroke, but it engages only after the cylinder has stopped moving and cannot be used as a dynamic brake.

The clamp is released by supplying air to the third G1/8 enclasp port. You must balance the air pressures on both sides of the piston before unlocking, otherwise the rod may jump abruptly. For human safety, an additional independent safety measure is required.
