About the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X600S

The AirTAC BSAI100X600-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a built-in spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the carbon steel rod at any position along its 600mm travel, providing a static holding force of 5500 N. At 0.5 MPa it generates 3927 N of push thrust, but remember the holding force is a separate quantity from thrust: you must size the clamp's 5500 N against your static load, not the cylinder's propulsion. The enclasp mechanism uses a third G1/8 unlock port, requiring 0.15-0.7 MPa to release.

This bidirectional lock holds the load whether the rod was extending or retracting, but it only engages after the cylinder has stopped—it cannot brake a moving rod. The variable air cushion at stroke ends only decelerates the piston; the clamp is what actually holds the load. A balanced air pressure on both piston sides is required to unlock it safely, preventing abrupt rod jumps. The integrated -S magnet works with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE solid-state sensors for position feedback.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø100mm)

PressurePush forcePull force

0.7 MPa (max)5498 N

Push/pull as tabulated. Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (5500 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X600S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Holding

Maintains a 5500 N vertical load securely at any point in the 600mm travel, preventing drops when air pressure is removed.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Clamps the workpiece in a fixed, non-end position for precision machining or inspection without relying on continuous air pressure.

shield

Power Loss Safety

The spring-applied clamp engages automatically upon air loss, freezing the rod instantly to secure the payload safely.

Is the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X600S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 100mm bore when a 50mm bore (982 N thrust, 1400 N holding force) is insufficient for your load, but a 125mm bore (6136 N thrust, 8600 N holding force) is physically oversized. Step down to a plain SAI cylinder if you only need standard double-acting motion without intermediate holding, or select a SAIL model if holding exclusively at the stroke end is acceptable. The BSAI is necessary when you must lock at any position. Always ensure the clamp locks only after the rod stops, and never rely on it as a human safety brake without an independent secondary measure.

For replacement, match the single-rod configuration, 100mm bore, 600mm stroke, and PT tapered port threads. The 1/2 cylinder ports are accompanied by the G1/8 enclasp port. The M20x1.5 rod thread and 25mm rod diameter handle high side loads, but at 600mm stroke an external guide rail is recommended to prevent binding. Mounting options include Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. The -S magnet supports CMSE/DMSE switches.

Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X600S FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 5500 N. It is bidirectional and can secure the rod at any position along the stroke, but it only engages after the cylinder has stopped moving.

The clamp is released via a third G1/8 enclasp port at 0.15-0.7 MPa. You must balance the air pressure on both sides of the piston before unlocking, or the rod may jump abruptly. It is not a moving-rod brake.
