About the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI125X200

The AirTAC BSAI125X200 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock mechanism. A defining feature is its ability to lock the piston rod at any position along its 200 mm stroke, providing a robust static holding force of 8600 N. This bidirectional enclasp grips the 32 mm carbon steel rod securely, whether the rod was extending or retracting. Operating at 0.15-0.7 MPa, it generates 6136 N of push thrust and 5734 N of pull thrust at 0.5 MPa.

It is crucial to distinguish this 8600 N static holding force from the cylinder's thrust; you must size the clamp capacity against the static load weight, not the pneumatic force. The clamp operates via a separate G1/8 enclasp port, functioning independently from the 1/2 cylinder ports. Furthermore, the variable air cushions only decelerate the piston near stroke ends to prevent impact damage; they do not hold the load. The clamp itself is the sole holding device, engaging only after the cylinder has completely stopped.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

8600 N
static holding force (Ø125 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Push/pull as tabulated. Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (8600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI125X200 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Hold

Secures heavy lifted payloads at any intermediate height along the vertical stroke, preventing gravity-induced drops during air loss.

shield

Emergency Stop Retention

Maintains the exact rod position anywhere in the 200 mm travel during sudden power or pressure loss, freezing the load safely in place.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Clamps a heavy workpiece rigidly at a specific mid-stroke coordinate for machining or inspection, absorbing process forces without relying on live air.

Is the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI125X200 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 125 mm bore model when an application demands extreme holding capacity that smaller bores cannot provide. If 8600 N exceeds your requirements, stepping down to a 100 mm bore offers a 5500 N holding force alongside 3927 N push thrust at 0.5 MPa, creating a lighter assembly. This BSAI variant is preferred over a SAIL cylinder when the load must be frozen mid-stroke rather than solely at the end of travel. If position-holding is entirely unnecessary, a plain SAI cylinder provides equivalent thrust without the clamp complexity.

For safe operation, remember the clamp locks only after the rod stops and cannot brake a moving load. It must be unlocked with balanced air pressures on both sides of the piston to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly. Safety-critical applications require an independent external safety measure. This single-rod configuration accepts Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts. It uses PT tapered ports and, because it lacks the -S option, does not include a magnet for CMSE or DMSE sensors.

Quick checklist

Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI125X200 FAQ

The BSAI125X200 provides a static holding force of 8600 N. The spring-applied clamp locks the rod at any position along the stroke, but it only engages after the cylinder has stopped moving; it cannot brake a moving rod.

The clamp is released by applying air to the G1/8 enclasp port, but only after the air pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced. If pressures are not balanced, the rod can move abruptly upon release, so an independent safety measure is required for human safety.
