About the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X600S

The AirTAC BSAI80X600-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock mechanism. It provides a static holding force of 3600 N, gripping the 25 mm carbon steel rod securely at any position along its 600 mm travel. Because it is a single-rod design, it generates 2513 N of push thrust and 2268 N of pull thrust at 0.5 MPa. You must size the 3600 N holding force against your static load, as this clamping capacity is entirely separate from the cylinder's pneumatic thrust.

The clamp locks bidirectionally once the piston has stopped, functioning as an enclasp gripper rather than a moving-rod brake. A third G1/8 enclasp port releases the lock when air pressure is applied, requiring balanced pressures on both sides of the piston to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly upon release. The variable air cushions only decelerate the piston near the stroke ends; the mechanical clamp is what actually holds the load. This unit includes a magnet for CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

3600 N
static holding force (Ø80 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

0.7 MPa (max)3519 N

Push/pull as tabulated. Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X600S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Holding

Locks a heavy vertical load at any intermediate height along the 600 mm stroke, preventing drops during power loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Hold

Clamps a workpiece in a specific mid-stroke location for machining or inspection without maintaining live air pressure.

shield

Emergency Stop Safety

Holds the rod safely in place when the system e-stops, though independent safety measures are required for human protection.

Is the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X600S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 80 mm bore when an application demands substantial mid-stroke holding, stepping up from a 63 mm bore that offers 1559 N thrust and 2200 N holding force. If you only need to hold a load at the fully extended or retracted stroke end, a plain SAIL cylinder suffices; the BSAI is necessary when the load must be arrested at varying intermediate positions. For simple movement without any position holding, a standard SAI cylinder is adequate.

Remember that the clamp engages only after the cylinder stops, so human-safety applications require an independent external safety measure. Unlocking demands balanced piston pressures to avoid sudden rod shifts. This 600 mm stroke configuration uses PT tapered ports, an M20x1.5 rod thread, and accepts Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts. Given the extended 600 mm stroke, an external guide is highly recommended to manage side loads and prevent rod binding.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X600S FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 3600 N. It engages bidirectionally at any position along the stroke, but only after the rod has completely stopped moving.

The lock is released by applying air to the G1/8 enclasp port. You must balance the air pressures on both sides of the piston before unlocking, otherwise the rod may move abruptly.
