About the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X800

The AirTAC BSAI80X800 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released enclasp mechanism that clamps the 25mm carbon steel rod to secure loads at ANY position along its 800mm stroke. It delivers a static holding force of 3600 N, strictly separate from the cylinder thrust. Buyers must size this holding capacity against the static load rather than the 2513 N push thrust generated at 0.5 MPa. The bidirectional clamp engages regardless of whether the rod was extending or retracting.

This model operates within a 0.15-0.7 MPa pressure range and requires a third G1/8 enclasp port for release alongside the 3/8 cylinder ports. The variable air cushion at both ends only decelerates the piston near stroke limits; it does not hold the load. Furthermore, the clamp locks only AFTER the cylinder has stopped moving—it cannot brake a rod in motion. Release requires balanced air pressure on both piston sides to prevent abrupt rod jumps.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

3600 N
static holding force (Ø80 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

Push/pull as tabulated. Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X800 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Hold

Secures elevated payloads at any intermediate height on vertical actuators, preventing gravity-driven drops during air pressure loss.

shield

Power Loss Safety

Maintains position instantly across the 800mm travel if electrical or air supply fails, locking the load exactly where it stopped.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Freezes the workpiece at a specific intermediate point for precise milling or inspection without relying on end-of-stroke stops.

Is the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X800 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 80mm bore when an application demands mid-stroke security, as the BSAI series locks anywhere along travel whereas a SAIL cylinder only holds at stroke ends. If your setup only needs end-of-stroke positioning without intermediate holding, a plain SAI cylinder suffices. To step down, the 63mm bore offers 1559 N thrust at 0.5 MPa and a 2200 N holding force; stepping up to 100mm yields 3927 N thrust and 5500 N holding force.

This single-rod configuration accepts Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts, with PT port threads. Because the 800mm stroke exceeds 300mm, an external guide is strongly recommended to manage side loads despite the robust M20x1.5 rod thread. The clamp locks after the rod stops, so human-safety applications require an independent mechanical backup. Without the -S magnet option, this unit cannot use CMSE or DMSE sensors.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X800 FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 3600 N. This is entirely separate from the 2513 N thrust at 0.5 MPa, meaning you must size the clamp against the static load weight, not the cylinder's pushing power.

No, the clamp locks only AFTER the cylinder has stopped; it is not a dynamic brake. Additionally, you must balance the air pressure on both sides of the piston before unlocking, otherwise the rod can move abruptly upon release.
