About the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X800S

The AirTAC BSAI80X800-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the 25mm carbon steel rod at any position along its 800mm stroke, providing a static holding force of 3600N. At 0.5MPa, it generates 2513N of thrust, but remember that holding force and thrust are distinct quantities; you must size the 3600N clamp capacity against your static load, not the push thrust. The -S magnet pairs with CMSE reed and DMSE solid-state sensors for position feedback.

This bidirectional enclasp locks only after the piston has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving rod. It releases via a dedicated G1/8 enclasp port, requiring balanced air pressure on both cylinder sides (0.15-0.7MPa operating range) to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly upon release. The variable air cushion at stroke ends only decelerates the piston; the clamp itself is the true holding mechanism.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

3600 N
static holding force (Ø80 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa2513 N2268 N
0.7 MPa (max)3519 N

Push/pull as tabulated. Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X800S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Drop Prevention

Holds a 80mm bore vertical load at any intermediate height with 3600N of static force, preventing a sudden fall if air pressure drops.

precision_manufacturing

Mid-Stroke Machining Hold

Locks the rod securely at a specific non-end position for machining or inspection tasks, ensuring the workpiece remains completely stationary.

shield

Emergency Power Loss Hold

Spring-applied clamp engages instantly anywhere in the 800mm travel to freeze the assembly safely in place during an unexpected plant power outage.

Is the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X800S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 80mm bore model when an application requires mid-stroke holding that a SAIL stroke-end lock cannot provide. If the 2513N thrust at 0.5MPa is excessive, step down to the 63mm bore (1559N thrust, 2200N holding force); if the 3600N clamp is insufficient, step up to the 100mm bore (3927N thrust, 5500N holding force). A plain SAI cylinder suffices if pressure is constantly maintained and no drop-safe holding is needed.

This configuration uses PT tapered ports (3/8 cylinder port, G1/8 enclasp port) and a single carbon steel rod with an M20x1.5 thread. The 800mm stroke exceeds the threshold requiring external side-load guidance; use an external guide rail to prevent rod binding. Compatible mountings include Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. Because human safety cannot rely solely on the lock, always add an independent safety measure. The clamp locks after the cylinder stops and unlocks only with balanced pressures.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load

Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X800S FAQ

The BSAI80X800-S provides a static holding force of 3600N. It clamps the rod bidirectionally at any position along the stroke, but it only engages after the cylinder has stopped moving.

The clamp is released by supplying air to the dedicated G1/8 enclasp port. To prevent the rod from jumping abruptly, the air pressures on both sides of the piston must be balanced before unlocking, ensuring the cylinder has stopped completely.
