About the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X900

The AirTAC BSAI80X900 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock mechanism. It provides a static holding force of 3600 N and locks the 25 mm carbon steel rod at any position along its 900 mm stroke. The base cylinder generates 3518 N of thrust at 0.7 MPa, but buyers must distinguish between thrust and holding force: the 3600 N clamp rating dictates the static load capacity, not the pneumatic push force.

This unit features a 3/8 inch PT cylinder port and a separate G1/8 enclasp port for the unlock air signal. The clamp engages only after the piston has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving load. Unlocking requires balanced air pressure on both sides of the piston to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly. Additionally, the variable air cushions at the stroke ends only decelerate the piston; they do not hold the load, as the clamp mechanism performs that function.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

3600 N
static holding force (Ø80 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

PressurePush forcePull force

Push/pull as tabulated. Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X900 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Drop Prevention

Holds a 3600 N vertical load at any point in the 900 mm travel if air pressure is lost, engaging only after the rod has come to a complete stop.

precision_manufacturing

Mid-Stroke Machining Hold

Secures the workpiece at a specific intermediate position for machining or inspection without relying on end-of-stroke cushions.

shield

Power Failure Safety

Provides a bidirectional static hold during an emergency power loss, keeping the load fixed until balanced unlock pressure is applied.

Is the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X900 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Select this 80 mm bore model when an application demands mid-stroke holding that a SAIL stroke-end lock cannot provide, or when a plain SAI cylinder lacks safety drop protection. If the 3600 N holding force is insufficient, step up to the 100 mm bore (5500 N holding force, 3927 N thrust at 0.5 MPa); if lower force is acceptable, the 63 mm bore offers 2200 N holding force and 1559 N thrust at 0.5 MPa. For this 900 mm stroke, an external guide is highly recommended to support the rod against side loads, despite the mechanical benefit of the M20x1.5 rod thread.

As a single-rod configuration, it supports Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mountings. This specific configuration uses PT tapered ports and does not include a magnet (-S). Remember that the clamp locks only after the cylinder stops, and safety-critical loads require an additional independent safety measure. Unlocking must occur with balanced pressures to avoid sudden rod movement.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X900 FAQ

The BSAI80X900 provides a static holding force of 3600 N. The clamp is spring-applied, air-released, and locks the rod bidirectionally at any position along the 900 mm stroke.

The clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped and cannot brake a moving rod. To release it safely, you must apply balanced air pressure to both sides of the piston via the 3/8 inch cylinder ports and supply unlock pressure to the G1/8 enclasp port, otherwise the rod may jump abruptly.
