About the Airtac MGC Stainless Steel Mini Cylinder MGC20X225S

The MGC20X225S is a double acting, JIS-standard round-body mini cylinder with a 20 mm bore and 225 mm stroke, fitted with a variable air cushion at both ends. Unlike a fixed bumper pad, this adjustable cushion lets you tune the needle valves so the piston decelerates smoothly near each end of travel, which means you can run faster piston speeds (up to 800 mm/s) or move heavier loads without hammering the covers. At 0.5 MPa this bore delivers 157 N push and 131.9 N pull, rising to 219.8 N push at 0.7 MPa, with a theoretical maximum of 32 kgf at 1.0 MPa. A practical rule of thumb: keep the working load to about 0.6 of the push force, so roughly 9.6 kgf (about 94 N) for a comfortable safety margin, or around 4.8 kg for a vertical lift.

Construction follows the proven MG family recipe: a SUS304 stainless-steel barrel with covers and stainless block riveted and rolled into place, plus a hard-chrome plated (20 um) carbon-steel rod and a two-way piston seal that also stores lubricant. The 8 mm rod carries an M8x1.25 male thread and the air ports are M5x0.8. Because the S code is fitted, a magnetic piston works with CMSG, DMSG or EMSG switches for position feedback. Mounting is via FA flange or LB foot, with I and Y rod knuckles available, and the 225 mm stroke sits comfortably inside the 500 mm standard range for this bore.

Where the Airtac MGC Stainless Steel Mini Cylinder MGC20X225S Is Used

speed

High-speed ejector on small assembly stations

At 30-800 mm/s with a 157 N push at 0.5 MPa, the adjustable air cushion lets this 20 mm bore kick parts off a fixture quickly yet still settle gently at end of stroke instead of hammering the covers.

conveyor_belt

Light diverting and stopping on conveyor lines

The 225 mm stroke gives useful reach for pushing small cartons or blisters off a belt, and the variable cushion decelerates the moving load smoothly even at higher cycle speeds.

sensors

Position-monitored test and clamping fixtures

With the fitted magnet accepting CMSG, DMSG or EMSG switches, the cylinder confirms extend and retract positions, while the cushion protects delicate fixture tooling from end-of-stroke shock.

Is the Airtac MGC Stainless Steel Mini Cylinder MGC20X225S the Right Cylinder?

At 20 mm bore this is the smallest MGC available, so there is no smaller cushioned option in the family; if 157 N of push at 0.5 MPa is not enough, step up to the 25 mm bore (245.3 N) or larger. If you do not need end-of-stroke deceleration, the plain bumper-type MG covers the same 20 mm bore without the cushion. Choose the MGC when your cycle runs fast or carries a moving load that would slam the covers of a bumper-only cylinder: the variable air cushion absorbs that energy and is adjustable to the application. Mount with the FA flange or LB foot and add I or Y rod knuckles where the tooling needs a pivot. The fitted magnet means CMSG, DMSG or EMSG switches can be clipped on for end-of-stroke or mid-stroke sensing. With a 225 mm stroke on an 8 mm rod, watch for side loads: at this slenderness, guide the load externally rather than letting the rod take lateral force, and remember the cushion only decelerates the stroke end, it is not a brake, so use a pilot check valve or external rod lock if the load must be held on air loss.

Airtac MGC Stainless Steel Mini Cylinder MGC20X225S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa it pushes with 157 N and pulls with 131.9 N; at 0.7 MPa that rises to 219.8 N push and 184.7 N pull, with a theoretical maximum of 32 kgf at 1.0 MPa. A good rule of thumb is to size the working load at about 0.6 of the push force, roughly 94 N (about 9.6 kgf), and for a vertical lift halve it again to about 4.8 kg.

The needle valves at each end throttle the exhaust air so the piston decelerates smoothly over the last part of travel; you adjust the cushion to suit your speed and load. It only decelerates the stroke end, it is not a lock or brake, so the MGC20X225S will not hold position if air pressure is lost. For a held load, add a pilot check valve or an external rod lock. The SUS304 stainless barrel and hard-chrome rod keep the body corrosion resistant, and mounting is FA flange or LB foot with optional I and Y rod knuckles.
