About the Airtac MGCD Stainless Steel Mini Air Cylinder MGCD20X450S

The AirTAC MGCD20X450S is a double acting, double-rod JIS round-body mini cylinder with a 20 mm bore and a 450 mm stroke. A rod exits both covers with the same M8x1.25 male thread at each end, so both sides of the piston see the rod-side area and the output force is equal in both directions: about 131.9 N at 0.5 MPa and 184.7 N at 0.7 MPa, with a theoretical maximum of 26.9 kgf at 1.0 MPa. A variable air cushion at both ends lets you tune the deceleration for smooth, high-speed stops, and the through-rod resists rotation while the rear rod end can carry a stop flag, position sensor trip, or a second light load. This S variant ships with a magnet fitted, so CMSG, DMSG or EMSG switches can be mounted directly on the SUS304 stainless barrel.

Built to the JIS mini-cylinder footprint, the MGCD20X450S uses a riveted round body in SUS304 stainless with a hard-chrome plated 8 mm rod for long seal and bearing life. It runs on air filtered to 40 um at 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi), tolerates 1.5 MPa (215 psi) proof pressure, works from -20 to +70 C, and cycles at 30-800 mm/s. Note that 450 mm exceeds the 300 mm maximum standard stroke for a 20 mm bore, so this is a made-to-order non-standard stroke. As a sizing insight, the 131.9 N force at 0.5 MPa supports roughly 8 kg as a safe vertical load using the 0.6 rule of thumb.

Where the Airtac MGCD Stainless Steel Mini Air Cylinder MGCD20X450S Is Used

swap_horiz

High-speed anti-rotation transfer

The through-rod keeps the load from rotating while the variable air cushion at each end absorbs the stop at transfer speeds up to 800 mm/s, ideal for sliding small parts between stations with about 131.9 N of force each way at 0.5 MPa.

compress

Twin-load light press with soft stop

Use both rod ends to press or seat two light workpieces at once, with the adjustable cushions giving a smooth, non-slam finish at each end of the 450 mm stroke.

sensors

Long-stroke switch-flag slide

The rear rod end carries a cam flag past CMSG or DMSG switches mounted on the magnet-fitted barrel, giving position feedback along the full 450 mm non-standard stroke.

Is the Airtac MGCD Stainless Steel Mini Air Cylinder MGCD20X450S the Right Cylinder?

Size the MGCD20X450S when you need equal force both ways with cushioned stops: at 0.5 MPa it delivers 131.9 N in each direction, so keep the working load near 0.6 of that (about 8 kg vertical) for margin. If you need more force, step up the bore; the MGCD family runs from 20 mm (smallest) to 63 mm (largest). For a double-rod cylinder with a fixed bumper instead of an adjustable cushion in this bore range, choose the MGD; for a single rod with a cushion, choose the MGC. Mount with the LB foot or FA flange, and pair rods with I or Y knuckle joints (SDB and CB are not offered). The fitted magnet on this S model accepts CMSG, DMSG and EMSG reed switches. At 450 mm the rod is long for a 20 mm bore, so support the load carefully and avoid side loads; use an external guide if the stroke carries any lateral force. Remember the air cushion only decelerates the stroke ends: it is not a lock, and the cylinder will not hold its load on air loss, so add a pilot check valve or external rod lock where holding is required. Port thread is M5x0.8; PT is standard with G and NPT options across the family.

Airtac MGCD Stainless Steel Mini Air Cylinder MGCD20X450S FAQ

Because the double rod puts the piston on the rod-side area in both directions, output is equal each way: 131.9 N at 0.5 MPa and 184.7 N at 0.7 MPa, with a theoretical maximum of 26.9 kgf at 1.0 MPa. Operating pressure is 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi), proof pressure is 1.5 MPa (215 psi), temperature range is -20 to +70 C, speed is 30-800 mm/s, and the fluid is air filtered to 40 um. The 450 mm stroke is non-standard (the 20 mm bore standard maximum is 300 mm) and is made to order.

The MGCD20X450S has an adjustable air cushion at both ends that decelerates the piston near each stroke end, so you can run higher speeds or heavier loads without hard impact; it is not a brake and does not hold the load on air loss, so add a pilot check valve or external rod lock if holding is needed. Unlike the MGD, which is a double-rod cylinder with a fixed bumper pad, the MGCD uses an adjustable cushion. Unlike the MGC, which is single rod, the MGCD's through-rod gives equal force both ways, anti-rotation, and a usable rear rod end. The fitted magnet on this S model allows CMSG, DMSG or EMSG switch mounting.
