About the Airtac MGCD Stainless Steel Mini Air Cylinder MGCD20X500

The AirTAC MGCD20X500 is a double acting, double-rod JIS round-body mini cylinder with a 20 mm bore and a 500 mm stroke. A rod exits both covers with the same M8x1.25 male thread at each end, so the piston pushes on the rod-side area in both directions and delivers an equal force of about 131.9 N each way at 0.5 MPa (184.7 N at 0.7 MPa). Both ends carry a variable air cushion, an adjustable throttle that decelerates the piston smoothly before each stop, so this long 500 mm stroke can run at higher speeds without hard metal-to-metal impact. The rear rod end also gives you a second working point for a stop flag, cam, or light second load.

Construction follows the JIS mini-cylinder footprint: a riveted SUS304 stainless barrel with a hard-chrome plated 8 mm rod for corrosion resistance and long seal life, and a two-way lubricant-storing piston seal. It runs on air filtered to 40 um at 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi), proof tested to 1.5 MPa (215 psi), from -20 to +70 C, at 30-800 mm/s. With a 500 mm stroke this is a made-to-order length above the 300 mm standard maximum for bore 20. A practical working rule: keep the real load near 0.6 of the push force, so about 8 kgf horizontally, or roughly 4 kg as a safe vertical figure. Note that the cushion decelerates the stroke ends only; it is not a lock, so use an external rod lock or pilot check valve if the load must hold on air loss.

Where the Airtac MGCD Stainless Steel Mini Air Cylinder MGCD20X500 Is Used

sync_alt

High-speed anti-rotation transfer

The through-rod keeps a small carrier from rotating over the full 500 mm travel while the variable air cushion at each end lets you run fast cycles without end-of-stroke bang, at this 131.9 N force class.

compress

Twin-point light press with soft stop

Use both rod ends to press or seat two small workpieces at once; equal force both ways (about 131.9 N at 0.5 MPa) and adjustable cushioning give a gentle, repeatable finish.

sensors

Long-slide position flag

Fit a stop or cam flag to the rear rod end of this 500 mm slide to trigger a mechanism or marker, with the cushion smoothing both ends of the travel.

Is the Airtac MGCD Stainless Steel Mini Air Cylinder MGCD20X500 the Right Cylinder?

Size by force, not bore: at this 20 mm bore the MGCD20X500 gives 131.9 N each way at 0.5 MPa, the smallest output in the MGCD range (the largest is the 63 mm bore at 1400.9 N). If you need a double-rod cylinder without cushioning in this small bore class, look at the MGD (fixed bumper, 20-40 mm); if you want a single rod with a cushion, the MGC is the equivalent. Choose the MGCD when the through-rod matters: anti-rotation guidance for the load, a rear rod end for a position flag or second light load, and adjustable deceleration at both ends of a long, fast stroke. This 500 mm stroke exceeds the 300 mm standard maximum for bore 20, so it is a non-standard made-to-order length; keep side loads off the rod and use FA flange or LB foot mounting plus I or Y rod knuckles as needed. Add the S option (magnet) if you want CMSG, DMSG, or EMSG switch sensing; without it no sensor can be mounted. Ports are M5x0.8; thread options are PT (standard), G, or NPT.

Installation & Maintenance Notes

  • check Use clean air filtered to 40µm or finer.
  • check Keep within 0.15 – 1.0 MPa operating pressure.
  • check Avoid side load on the piston rod.
  • check Do not dismantle the riveted front/back covers.
  • check On first run, back off the cushion and release gradually.
  • check Installation by qualified personnel per AirTAC docs.

Airtac MGCD Stainless Steel Mini Air Cylinder MGCD20X500 FAQ

Because both sides of the piston see the rod-side area, the force is equal in both directions: 131.9 N at 0.5 MPa and 184.7 N at 0.7 MPa, with a theoretical maximum of 26.9 kgf at 1.0 MPa. Operating pressure is 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi), proof pressure 1.5 MPa (215 psi), temperature -20 to +70 C, speed 30-800 mm/s, on air filtered to 40 um. Keep the working load near 0.6 of the push force, about 8 kgf horizontally or roughly 4 kg vertically.

The MGCD has an adjustable air cushion at both ends: a metering throttle bleeds trapped air to decelerate the piston smoothly before each stop, so you can tune the braking to the speed and load. It is not a fixed bumper pad (that is the MGD) and not a lock, so an external rod lock or pilot check valve is needed to hold a load on air loss. Unlike the single-rod MGC, the MGCD is a double-rod cylinder with equal force both ways and a rear rod end for a flag or second load. Add the S option (magnet) to mount CMSG, DMSG, or EMSG switches.
