About the Airtac MGCD Stainless Steel Mini Air Cylinder MGCD40X250

The AirTAC MGCD40X250 is a double acting, double rod JIS mini cylinder with a 40 mm bore and a 250 mm stroke. A rod exits both covers with the same M14x1.5 male thread at each end, and because both sides of the piston see the rod-side area, the output force is equal in both directions: about 527.8 N at 0.5 MPa and 738.9 N at 0.7 MPa, with a theoretical maximum of 107.6 kgf at 1.0 MPa. A variable air cushion at both ends lets you tune the deceleration for smooth, high-speed stops, and the through-rod resists rotation while giving you a rear rod end for a stop flag, position switch trigger, or a second load. Applying the usual 0.6 working-load rule of thumb, size external loads to roughly 32 kg; for a vertical lift, keep the figure near 27 kg.

Construction follows the JIS round-body mini format: a riveted SUS304 stainless barrel, hard-chrome plated carbon-steel rods, and a two-way lubricant-storing piston seal. It runs on air filtered to 40 um at 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi), tolerates a proof pressure of 1.5 MPa (215 psi), works from -20 to +70 C, and covers speeds of 30-800 mm/s. Ports are 1/8". Mounting options are LB foot and FA flange plus I and Y rod knuckles; the optional S code adds a magnet for CMSG, DMSG, or EMSG switches. This model ships without the magnet, so no sensor can be mounted unless the S variant is ordered.

Where the Airtac MGCD Stainless Steel Mini Air Cylinder MGCD40X250 Is Used

sync_alt

High-speed anti-rotation transfer

The through-rod keeps the load from rotating while the variable air cushion at both ends absorbs the energy of 30-800 mm/s travel, letting a 32 kg-class pallet shuttle between stations without hard stops.

compress

Twin-load press with soft stop

Rod ends front and rear each carry a small tool or pad, giving 527.8 N of equal force in both directions at 0.5 MPa, while the adjustable cushion eases the workpiece into contact instead of slamming it.

sensors

Rear-switch slide with flag

Fit a stop flag to the rear rod end so a magnet-equipped -S variant with a CMSG or DMSG switch confirms end of stroke on a 250 mm linear slide, with cushioned deceleration protecting the mechanism at each end.

Is the Airtac MGCD Stainless Steel Mini Air Cylinder MGCD40X250 the Right Cylinder?

At 40 mm bore the MGCD40X250 delivers 527.8 N each way at 0.5 MPa, so check your load against that equal-force figure in both directions rather than a single-rod push value. Step down to MGCD20 or MGCD25 for lighter duty, or up to MGCD50 or MGCD63 when you need more thrust; the cushioned double-rod MGCD (with the single-rod MGC) is the only MG-family type offered in 50 and 63 mm bores. If you want a double-rod cylinder with a fixed bumper instead of an adjustable cushion in the 20-40 mm range, look at the MGD; for a single rod plus cushion, the MGC is the counterpart. Choose the 250 mm stroke freely here, since the maximum standard stroke for this bore is 500 mm, but support long strokes carefully to limit side loading on the rods. Add the S code if you need position sensing with CMSG, DMSG, or EMSG switches, and pick LB foot or FA flange mounting with I or Y knuckles as required; this series does not offer CB or SDB mounts. Note that the cushion only decelerates the piston at each end and does not lock it: the MGCD will not hold a load on air loss, so add an external rod lock or pilot check valve where holding is required.

Installation & Maintenance Notes

  • check Use clean air filtered to 40µm or finer.
  • check Keep within 0.15 – 1.0 MPa operating pressure.
  • check Avoid side load on the piston rod.
  • check Do not dismantle the riveted front/back covers.
  • check On first run, back off the cushion and release gradually.
  • check Installation by qualified personnel per AirTAC docs.

Airtac MGCD Stainless Steel Mini Air Cylinder MGCD40X250 FAQ

Because the double-rod design exposes the rod-side area in both directions, output is equal both ways: 527.8 N at 0.5 MPa and 738.9 N at 0.7 MPa, with a theoretical maximum of 107.6 kgf at 1.0 MPa. Operating pressure is 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi), proof pressure is 1.5 MPa (215 psi), temperature range is -20 to +70 C, speed is 30-800 mm/s, and the fluid is air filtered to 40 um. Ports are 1/8" and the rod thread is M14x1.5 at both ends.

The MGCD40X250 has an adjustable air cushion at both ends that decelerates the piston for smooth stops at higher speeds or with heavier loads; it is a cushion, not a brake, so the cylinder will not hold a load on air loss (add an external rod lock or pilot check valve for that). Unlike the MGD, which is a double-rod cylinder with a fixed bumper pad, the MGCD cushions are adjustable. Unlike the single-rod MGC, the MGCD's through-rod gives equal force in both directions and a rear rod end for flags or a second load. The optional S code adds a magnet for CMSG, DMSG, or EMSG switches; this non-S model cannot accept a sensor.
