About the Airtac MGCD Stainless Steel Mini Air Cylinder MGCD63X125

The AirTAC MGCD63X125 is a JIS-standard round-body mini cylinder, double acting, with a double rod: a 20 mm hard-chrome rod exits both covers with the same M18x1.5 male thread at each end, so both rod ends move together and the output force is equal in both directions. Because each side of the piston sees the rod-side area, this 63 mm bore delivers about 1400.9 N (142.8 kgf) each way at 0.5 MPa and 1961.2 N at 0.7 MPa, with a theoretical maximum of 285.7 kgf at 1.0 MPa. As a rule of thumb, size the real working load at roughly 0.6 of that push force, about 840 N, or about 71 kg for a safe vertical lift.

Unlike a bumper-padded build, this variant carries a variable air cushion at both ends: adjusting screws meter the exhaust so the piston decelerates smoothly at each end of the 125 mm stroke, allowing higher travel speeds and heavier loads without hard impact. The through-rod also gives natural anti-rotation and a free rear rod end you can use for a position stop, a cam flag or a second load. Construction follows the JIS mini footprint with a riveted SUS304 stainless barrel, ports at 1/4", an operating range of 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi), proof pressure 1.5 MPa (215 psi), -20 to +70 C, and speeds of 30-800 mm/s.

Where the Airtac MGCD Stainless Steel Mini Air Cylinder MGCD63X125 Is Used

swap_horiz

High-speed anti-rotation transfer

The through-rod keeps the payload from twisting during fast 125 mm shuttle moves, while the variable air cushion at both ends absorbs the stop at conveyor-transfer speeds that would hammer a plain cylinder.

compress

Twin-load press with soft stop

With about 1400.9 N available identically on each rod end at 0.5 MPa, the MGCD63X125 can press or stake two symmetric workpieces at once, and the adjustable cushions give a controlled landing instead of a metal-to-metal slam.

sensors

Rear-switch slide

The second rod end carries a cam flag or stop while the front end does the work, and with the S magnet option the CMSG/DMSG/EMSG switches report both end positions on this 63 mm slide.

Is the Airtac MGCD Stainless Steel Mini Air Cylinder MGCD63X125 the Right Cylinder?

At 63 mm bore this is the largest MGCD size, so step down to smaller bores if 1400.9 N per direction at 0.5 MPa is more force than your load needs. Choose the MGCD when you want equal force both ways plus adjustable cushioning at each end; if your bore falls in the 20-40 range and a fixed bumper pad is enough, the MGD double-rod cylinder is the lighter alternative, and for a single rod with a cushion pick the MGC. The 125 mm stroke is within the 500 mm standard range for this bore; longer strokes raise side-load risk, so guide the load externally. Mount with the LB foot or FA flange, add I or Y rod knuckles on the rod ends (SDB and CB are not offered), and order the S code if you want a magnet for CMSG, DMSG or EMSG switches - without it no sensor can be fitted. Note the cushion only decelerates the stroke ends; it is not a lock, so use an external rod lock or pilot check valve where the load must be held on air loss.

Installation & Maintenance Notes

  • check Use clean air filtered to 40µm or finer.
  • check Keep within 0.15 – 1.0 MPa operating pressure.
  • check Avoid side load on the piston rod.
  • check Do not dismantle the riveted front/back covers.
  • check On first run, back off the cushion and release gradually.
  • check Installation by qualified personnel per AirTAC docs.

Airtac MGCD Stainless Steel Mini Air Cylinder MGCD63X125 FAQ

Because the double-rod design exposes the rod-side area in both directions, output is equal each way: 1400.9 N at 0.5 MPa and 1961.2 N at 0.7 MPa, with a theoretical maximum of 285.7 kgf at 1.0 MPa. Operating pressure is 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi), proof pressure is 1.5 MPa (215 psi), the medium is air filtered to 40 um, temperature range is -20 to +70 C, and speed is 30-800 mm/s. Ports are 1/4" and the rod thread is M18x1.5 at both ends.

The MGCD63X125 has an adjustable air cushion at both ends: metering screws throttle the exhaust near each stroke end so the piston decelerates smoothly, which suits higher speeds and heavier loads. It is an air cushion, not a fixed bumper pad (that is the MGD, which is bumper-equipped and offered only up to 40 mm bore), and unlike the single-rod MGC the MGCD has a rod at both covers, so force is identical in extend and retract. Add the S code to fit CMSG, DMSG or EMSG magnetic switches.
