About the Airtac MTG Stainless Steel Mini Cylinder MTG40X150

The AirTAC MTG40X150 is a JIS-standard round-body mini cylinder built as a single acting PULL unit: an internal spring holds the rod out at rest, and compressed air retracts (pulls) the rod on the work stroke. With its 40 mm bore and 150 mm stroke, it delivers about 339.1 N of net pull at 0.5 MPa and 550.1 N at 0.7 MPa, figures already measured after the spring, so what you see is what reaches the load. One air line is all it needs, which keeps plumbing simple on draw, retract, close and tension motions where the return direction is handled by the spring. If the air supply fails, the spring simply pushes the rod back out to its extended rest position.

Construction suits damp and washdown surroundings: a SUS304 stainless barrel, a hard-chrome plated 16 mm rod with an M14x1.5 male thread, riveted covers and a fixed anti-impact bumper pad that softens the stroke ends. The 150 mm stroke is the maximum standard for this bore, since the return spring occupies part of the body. A practical working figure: at 0.5 MPa the 339.1 N pull corresponds to roughly 17 kgf, so halving it gives a safe vertical load of about 8 kg. Ports are 1/8" on every MTG bore, operating pressure is 0.2-1.0 MPa (28-145 psi) with a 1.5 MPa (215 psi) proof pressure, and speed runs 50-800 mm/s.

Where the Airtac MTG Stainless Steel Mini Cylinder MTG40X150 Is Used

settings

Retracting a locking pin

Air pulls the pin out of a fixture or die on command, and the spring pushes it back into the locked position whenever air is removed, a fail-safe default for clamping fixtures.

conveyor_belt

Tensioning a belt or chain

The spring keeps the idler pushed out to maintain belt tension, while the 339.1 N pull at 0.5 MPa lets you draw the idler back to slacken the belt for service.

Closing a chute shutter

A single air line retracts the rod to slide the shutter closed; on air loss the spring returns the shutter to its open rest position without any control logic.

Is the Airtac MTG Stainless Steel Mini Cylinder MTG40X150 the Right Cylinder?

MTG40X150 is the largest MTG pull cylinder, with 339.1 N net pull at 0.5 MPa versus 224.8 N for the 32 mm bore, 132.6 N for 25 mm and 84.8 N for 20 mm. Choose it when your one-way pull needs that extra force but a compact round body still matters. Remember the direction of operation: the spring extends the rod and air retracts it, and the spring sets a 0.2 MPa (28 psi) minimum working pressure, so lighter loads must still see at least that pressure to complete the pull. The 150 mm stroke is the maximum standard for this bore; for longer travel or powered two-way motion, step up to the double-acting MG series. Mounting options are LB foot, FA flange, CB clevis and SDB pivot, plus I and Y rod knuckles; add the S code if you want a magnet for CMSG, DMSG or EMSG switches. This unit has no magnet fitted, so no sensor can be mounted on it as ordered.

Installation & Maintenance Notes

  • check Use clean air filtered to 40µm or finer.
  • check Keep within 0.2 – 1.0 MPa operating pressure.
  • check Avoid side load on the piston rod.
  • check Do not dismantle the riveted front/back covers.
  • check On first run, back off the cushion/impact settings and release gradually.
  • check Installation by qualified personnel per AirTAC docs.

Airtac MTG Stainless Steel Mini Cylinder MTG40X150 FAQ

The net pull, already after subtracting the return spring, is 339.1 N at 0.5 MPa and 550.1 N at 0.7 MPa. Operating pressure is 0.2-1.0 MPa (28-145 psi) with a 1.5 MPa (215 psi) proof pressure, fluid is air filtered to 40 um, working temperature is -20 to +70 C, and speed range is 50-800 mm/s. The port is 1/8" and the rod is 16 mm with an M14x1.5 male thread.

In the MTG the spring extends the rod and compressed air retracts (pulls) it, so it needs one air line and fails to the extended position on air loss. The MSG is the opposite single acting type: air pushes and the spring retracts. The MG is double acting, with air on both strokes for two-way powered motion and longer strokes. This MTG40X150 has no magnet; add the S code to fit CMSG, DMSG or EMSG switches.
