About the Airtac MTG Stainless Steel Mini Cylinder MTG40X50

The AirTAC MTG40X50 is a JIS-standard round-body mini cylinder built as a single acting PULL unit: an internal spring holds the rod extended at rest, and compressed air retracts (pulls) the rod on the work stroke. With a 40 mm bore and 50 mm stroke it delivers a net pull of 339.1 N at 0.5 MPa and 550.1 N at 0.7 MPa, already after the spring, so the figures you see are what reaches the load. Since roughly 0.6 of the rated pull is a realistic working margin, plan on about 200 N, or around 20 kg of safe draw load at 0.5 MPa. One air line is all it needs, which keeps plumbing and valve count low for one-way draw, retract, close or tension motions.

Construction suits damp and washdown surroundings: a SUS304 stainless barrel, a hard-chrome plated carbon-steel rod (20 um chrome), riveted rolled covers and a two-way lubricant-storing piston seal. A fixed anti-impact bumper pad softens the stroke ends, though it is not a lock or brake; on air loss the spring simply pushes the rod back out to its extended rest position. Operating pressure is 0.2-1.0 MPa (28-145 psi) with 1.5 MPa (215 psi) proof, temperature -20 to +70 C and speed 50-800 mm/s. The 1/8" port is common to every MTG bore, the male rod thread is M14x1.5 on a 16 mm rod, and ordering the -S magnet option enables CMSG, DMSG or EMSG position sensing.

Where the Airtac MTG Stainless Steel Mini Cylinder MTG40X50 Is Used

bolt

Retracting a locking pin

Air pulls the pin out of a fixture or die on command; if air is lost the spring pushes the pin back out to its extended rest position, a fail-safe direction for many clamping layouts.

conveyor_belt

Drawing a web or tape

With about 200 N of usable draw at 0.5 MPa (roughly 20 kg), the MTG40X50 tensions or pulls light webs, tapes and belts in one direction while the spring resets the stroke.

settings

Closing a shutter or gate

A single solenoid valve retracts the rod to slide a small shutter, chute gate or guard closed; the spring returns it open without any second air line.

Is the Airtac MTG Stainless Steel Mini Cylinder MTG40X50 the Right Cylinder?

Within the MTG range the 40 mm bore is the largest, so choose the MTG40X50 when your one-way pull needs more than the 224.8 N at 0.5 MPa that a 32 mm bore provides; step down to MTG32 or MTG25 for lighter draws. Remember the behaviour is spring-extends / air-retracts, and the spring-return design caps standard strokes at 150 mm while setting a 0.2 MPa (28 psi) minimum working pressure. If you need two-way powered travel or a longer stroke, move to the double-acting MG series instead. Mounting options are LB foot, FA flange, CB clevis and SDB pivot, plus I and Y rod knuckles; add the S code if you want a CMSG, DMSG or EMSG switch, since this SKU carries no magnet and accepts no sensor without it.

Quick checklist

Installation & Maintenance Notes

  • check Use clean air filtered to 40µm or finer.
  • check Keep within 0.2 – 1.0 MPa operating pressure.
  • check Avoid side load on the piston rod.
  • check Do not dismantle the riveted front/back covers.
  • check On first run, back off the cushion/impact settings and release gradually.
  • check Installation by qualified personnel per AirTAC docs.

Airtac MTG Stainless Steel Mini Cylinder MTG40X50 FAQ

Net pull (already after the spring) is 339.1 N at 0.5 MPa and 550.1 N at 0.7 MPa for this 40 mm bore, 50 mm stroke model. Operating pressure is 0.2-1.0 MPa (28-145 psi) with a 1.5 MPa (215 psi) proof pressure, air filtered to 40 um, temperature -20 to +70 C, and speed 50-800 mm/s. The 1/8" port is used on every MTG bore.

In the MTG the internal spring extends the rod at rest and air retracts (pulls) it, so only one air line is needed. The MSG is the opposite single acting type (air pushes, spring retracts), and the MG is double acting with air on both sides for two-way powered travel and strokes beyond the 150 mm spring-return limit. On air loss the MTG spring pushes the rod out to extended; the fixed bumper pad only softens stroke ends and holds nothing. Add the -S magnet option to fit a CMSG, DMSG or EMSG sensor.
