Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X1000

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X1000 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 1000mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X1000

The AirTAC SAILB160X1000 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. This lock engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, securely holding the rod in place without requiring continuous live air pressure. Delivering a pull force of 9425N at 0.5MPa, it is designed for heavy-duty load-holding tasks. The cylinder features an extruded aluminum barrel and uses a carbon steel rod for robust side-load resistance.

A key mechanical detail is that the variable air cushion at the locker end is shorter (28mm) than the free end cushion (50mm), a necessary accommodation for the locking mechanism. The lock releases automatically via air supply to the release port or manually via a lever. Because this is a static holding lock, it engages only after the cylinder has stopped; it is not a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

0.5 MPa10053 N9425 N

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X1000 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Secures elevated loads in the retracted position during a power loss, preventing sudden drops on heavy lifting platforms.

conveyor_belt

Heavy Conveyor Hold

Locks a conveyor gating mechanism firmly at the stroke end to halt material flow without consuming continuous air.

shield

Machine Guard Locking

Maintains a machine safety door securely closed and held at the retracted terminal until the release air is actively supplied.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X1000 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160mm bore when substantial force is required, stepping up from the 125mm bore which provides 5734N of pull at 0.5MPa. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be held safely in the retracted position, whereas a SAILF variant would hold the extended stroke end. If your application requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke terminal, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct alternative.

For safe operation, avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. Because human safety may depend on the load staying up, add an independent safety measure. When replacing this unit, match the 1000mm stroke, back locker position, 3/4-inch PT port, and appropriate mounting from the ISO 15552 interface set. Given the 1000mm stroke, ensure adequate guide support to prevent excessive side-loading on the carbon steel rod.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X1000 FAQ

At 0.5 MPa, the push force is 10053N and the pull force is 9425N. At the maximum operating pressure of 1.0 MPa, it achieves a maximum push force of 2050 kgf.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only at the retracted stroke end after the rod has stopped. It is a static hold, not a dynamic brake. It unlocks automatically by supplying air to the release port or manually via a lever.
