Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X100S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X100S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 100mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X100S

The AirTAC SAILB160X100-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a mechanical lock in the back cover, engineered to secure heavy loads at the retracted stroke end. Featuring a carbon steel rod and a magnetic piston for CMSE and DMSE sensors, it delivers a substantial 10053N push and 9425N pull at 0.5 MPa. The integrated lock is spring-applied and air-released, meaning it engages automatically to hold the rod in place whenever the release air is cut, ensuring true power-loss safety.

Unlike a standard SAI cylinder, this SAIL model physically clamps the rod at stroke termination without relying on live air pressure. The variable air cushion at the locker end is specifically shortened to 28mm compared to the 50mm cushion on the free end, accommodating the locking mechanism. For position sensing, the -S magnet works precisely with AirTAC CMSE reed switches and DMSE electronic solid-state sensors.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

0.5 MPa10053 N9425 N

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Vertical Power-Loss Safety

Secures heavy lifted platens in the retracted position instantly if air supply drops, preventing crashes via mechanical lock engagement.

Press Safety Hold

Locks industrial press rams safely in the up position during maintenance or emergency stops until release air is applied.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X100S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 160mm bore cylinder when an application demands high force alongside guaranteed load holding on power loss. If 9425N pull at 0.5 MPa is excessive, stepping down to a 125mm bore yields 5734N; conversely, a 200mm bore provides 15080N pull. Choose this SAILB configuration to hold the rod at the retracted position, whereas a SAILF variant holds at the extended end. If your process requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke terminal, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice instead.

The lock is a static holding device that engages only after the cylinder has stopped, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Valve selection is critical: never use a fast-exhaust valve with this locker side, as back-pressure can unintentionally release the lock—always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. If human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, add an independent safety measure. Replacement matches require 160mm bore, 100mm stroke, back locker position, PT tapered ports, and the -S magnet option.

Quick checklist

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X100S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa operating pressure, this 160mm bore cylinder provides 10053N of push force and 9425N of pull force. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 14074N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod only at the retracted stroke end. It engages statically after the piston stops and is released automatically via air supply or manually via a lever.
