Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X75

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X75 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 75mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X75

The AirTAC SAILB160X75 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock housed in the back cover. Because this is a SAILB configuration, the spring-applied, air-released lock engages precisely when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end. This allows the cylinder to securely hold a heavy load in the rod-in position without requiring continuous live air pressure. In the 160mm bore class, it delivers a substantial 10053N pull force at 0.5 MPa, utilizing a 40mm carbon steel rod and a 3/4 PT tapered port.

A key design detail of this model is the variable air cushion at the locker end, which is shortened to 28mm compared to the 50mm cushion on the free end. The lock itself is a static holding mechanism that engages only after the cylinder has fully stopped at the stroke terminal; it is not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. To release the lock and allow movement, you simply supply air to the release port for automatic unlocking, or use the manual release lever.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X75 Is Used

Vertical Lift Holding

Secures heavy lifted loads in the retracted position during power loss, preventing sudden drops.

Safety Gate Locking

Holds safety gates and heavy barriers firmly closed at the stroke end without needing continuous air supply.

Heavy Press Hold

Maintains clamping force on large components at the retracted stroke terminal while downstream work occurs.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X75 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 160mm bore model when an application demands high load-holding capacity at the retracted position, as it provides 10053N pull at 0.5 MPa (stepping down to a 125mm bore reduces pull to 5734N). If your design requires the load to be held at the extended rod-out position instead, choose the SAILF160X75 variant. For applications where the load must be clamped and held at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than at the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice instead of this SAIL model.

When integrating this cylinder, remember that the lock is a static, stroke-end hold, not a mid-stroke clamp or a moving-rod brake. Valve selection is critical: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with this lock cylinder, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock; an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. If human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, add an independent safety measure as well. To match this cylinder for replacement, verify the 160mm bore, 75mm stroke, back locker position, 3/4 PT port, and standard carbon steel rod without a magnet.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X75 FAQ

The 160mm bore provides a push force of 10053N and a pull force of 9425N at 0.5 MPa. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 14074N, with a maximum push force of 18095N at 0.9 MPa.

The spring-applied, air-released lock engages automatically when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It provides a static hold without live pressure, and is unlocked by supplying air to the release port or using the manual release lever. It does not clamp at mid-stroke.
