Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X80

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X80 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 80mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X80

The AirTAC SAILB160X80 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock housed within the back cover. Because it is a SAILB configuration, a spring-applied, air-released mechanism engages automatically to hold the rod securely at the retracted stroke end whenever the release air is cut. Delivering a robust 14074N of push force at 0.7MPa, this carbon-steel rod unit is engineered for heavy-duty load-holding and power-loss safety.

The lock is a static holding device that engages only after the piston stops at the terminal position, meaning it will not brake a moving rod or clamp at an arbitrary mid-stroke point. To accommodate the lock hardware, the variable air cushion at the locker end is shortened to 28mm, compared to the 50mm cushion length on the free end. For position detection, the barrel features dual sensor grooves ready for AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic solid-state switches, though a magnet is not specified on this base model.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X80 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds heavy elevated loads securely at the retracted stroke end during power loss, preventing sudden drops on vertical actuators.

factory

Heavy Press Hold

Maintains clamping force on large presses at the rod-in position without consuming continuous compressed air.

shield

Machine Guard Lock

Secures safety gates and heavy machine guards in the closed position until the air-release port is actively pressurized.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X80 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 160mm bore variant when an application demands high thrust alongside guaranteed safety holding at the rod-in position; if you need slightly less force, the 125mm bore offers 8590N push at 0.7MPa. Choose SAILB for retracted-end holding, whereas SAILF holds the extended end. If your process requires locking at any intermediate mid-stroke position rather than only at the terminal end, select the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead.

Ensure your pneumatic circuit avoids fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the spring-applied lock; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. The lock provides a static hold without live pressure, but if human safety depends on the load staying up, add an independent safety measure. When replacing this unit, match the 160mm bore, 80mm stroke, back locker position, 3/4 PT port threads, and your required mounting style from the ISO 15552 interface.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X80 FAQ

At 0.7MPa operating pressure, this 160mm bore cylinder provides 14074N of push force and 9425N of pull force. At the maximum 1.0MPa pressure, it achieves a push force of 18095N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod at the retracted stroke end. It engages statically after the cylinder stops and cannot brake a moving rod; you unlock it by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.
