Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X1000S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X1000S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø40mm bore, 1000mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X1000S

The AirTAC SAILB40X1000-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. A spring-applied, air-released lock engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, holding a pull load of 528N at 0.5MPa securely without live pressure. This 1000mm stroke is a non-standard length exceeding the 40mm bore maximum of 800mm, making it a custom execution for extended travel. The extruded aluminum barrel includes sensor grooves for CMSE reed and DMSE solid-state switches.

The lock is a static holding device, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. At the locker end, the variable air cushion is notably shorter at 20mm compared to the 27mm cushion on the free end, ensuring compact deceleration near the locked terminal. To release the rod, supply air to the release port for automatic unlocking or use the manual release lever.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Locks a workpiece at the rod-in terminal for safe machining or tool changes.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X1000S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 40mm bore cylinder when an application requires 628N of push force at 0.5MPa; stepping up to a 50mm bore provides 982N if higher thrust is needed. Choose the SAILB configuration when the load must be held at the retracted rod-in position. If your process requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice instead. Because this is a 1000mm stroke, mounting must account for side loads—always use a guide rail to prevent rod bending.

For reliable lock operation, never use a fast-exhaust valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock; an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. The lock holds statically at the stroke end only, so if human safety depends on the load staying up, add an independent safety measure. Replacement matches require a 40mm bore, 1000mm stroke, back locker position, PT port threads, and the -S magnet.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X1000S FAQ

At 0.5MPa, it provides 628N of push force and 528N of pull force. At 0.7MPa, the push force is 879N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging statically only when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It does not brake a moving rod or hold at mid-stroke. Unlock automatically via air release or manually via the lever.
