Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X175S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X175S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø40mm bore, 175mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X175S

The AirTAC SAILB40X175-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air drives a lock pin into the carbon steel rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without consuming live pressure. In the 40mm bore class, it delivers 628N of push and 528N of pull at 0.5 MPa, making it a compact choice for light-duty holding tasks.

This unit includes the -S magnet option for seamless position feedback with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE solid-state sensors. A notable design trait is the variable air cushion: the locker end features a shorter 20mm cushion compared to the 27mm cushion on the free end, ensuring proper deceleration without interfering with the locking mechanism. You can unlock the rod automatically by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X175S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Hold

Prevents a light vertical load from dropping under gravity when air pressure drops, locking securely at the retracted top position.

shield

Safety Gate Lock

Keeps a guard door or safety barrier firmly closed and retracted until the release air is actively supplied.

precision_manufacturing

Clamp and Hold

Holds a workpiece in place at the end of the stroke while power is removed, ensuring stable positioning for secondary operations.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X175S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 40mm bore model when an application requires maintaining a retracted position during a power loss, as the static lock engages only after the piston reaches the back stroke terminal. If your process demands higher clamping power, stepping up to the 50mm bore yields 825N of pull at 0.5 MPa. For applications where the load must be clamped at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct alternative.

When integrating this cylinder, avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. If human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, add an independent safety measure. To replace this unit, match the 40mm bore, 175mm stroke, back locker position, PT tapered ports, and the -S magnet. The 175mm stroke is under the 300mm threshold, so standard mounting options like Basic, FA, or TC suffice without extra side-load guides.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X175S FAQ

This 40mm bore cylinder generates 628N of push and 528N of pull at 0.5 MPa, reaching 1130N push at 0.9 MPa. It operates efficiently at speeds between 30 and 800 mm/s.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, holding the rod only at the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It engages statically after the cylinder stops and is not a mid-stroke clamp or dynamic brake; use the air release port or manual lever to unlock it.
