Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X1000S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X1000S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø50mm bore, 1000mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X1000S

The AirTAC SAILB50X1000-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air drives a lock pin into the carbon steel rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without requiring live pressure. You can unlock it automatically by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.

This 50mm bore model generates 982N of push force and 825N of pull force at 0.5 MPa, making it well-suited for moderate load-holding tasks. The barrel utilizes an extruded aluminum profile with sensor grooves on both sides, and the included -S magnet works seamlessly with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic solid-state switches. Notably, the variable air cushion at the locker end is 20mm, which is shorter than the 30mm cushion found at the free end.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X1000S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds a raised vertical load securely at the retracted stroke end during a power loss, preventing sudden drops.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor Hold

Locks a conveyor section in the retracted position to halt product flow safely without needing continuous air pressure.

shield

Machine Guard Hold

Keeps a safety gate or guard firmly closed and locked at the rod-in position until the release air is supplied.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X1000S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 50mm bore cylinder when an application requires 982N of thrust at 0.5 MPa; if your load demands less force, stepping down is an option, but if you need higher holding capacity, consider the 63mm bore which provides 1559N of push force at 0.5 MPa. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be secured at the retracted rod-in position, whereas a SAILF variant would hold the load at the extended rod-out position. Remember that this lock engages statically only after the piston reaches the stroke terminal; if your application requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point, the AirTAC BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice instead.

For safe operation, never use a fast-exhaust valve with this lock cylinder, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. Additionally, if human safety relies on the load remaining suspended, implement an independent mechanical safety measure. Because this unit features a 1000mm stroke, which exceeds typical standard lengths, it is classified as a non-standard stroke and requires external guide rails to prevent excessive side-load stresses on the rod. To replace this cylinder, match the 50mm bore, 1000mm stroke, back locker position, PT port threads, and the -S magnet option.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X1000S FAQ

At a 0.5 MPa operating pressure, this 50mm bore cylinder provides 982N of push force and 825N of pull force. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 1374N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It provides a static hold, not a dynamic brake, and can be unlocked automatically via air or manually via a lever.
