Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X160

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X160 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø50mm bore, 160mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X160

The AirTAC SAILB50X160 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. This spring-applied, air-released lock engages automatically when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, securely holding the rod in place without requiring continuous live air pressure. With a 50mm bore, it generates 982N of push force and 825N of pull force at 0.5MPa, making it well-suited for medium-duty vertical load management.

The locking mechanism is strictly a static holding device for the stroke-end position, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. To unlock, you simply supply air to the release port or use the manual override lever. Note that the variable air cushion at the locker end is 20mm, which is shorter than the 30mm cushion on the free end, ensuring compact lock integration without sacrificing end-of-stroke deceleration.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Secures elevated loads in the retracted position instantly upon air pressure loss, preventing sudden drops on lifting machinery.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor Hold

Locks a diverter or gate in the rod-in home position during power loss to maintain material flow control.

Clamp and Hold

Maintains a retracted clamping state without consuming compressed air, ensuring workpiece stability during machine pauses.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X160 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 50mm bore model when an application requires 982N of push force at 0.5MPa and guaranteed load holding upon retraction. If your process requires less force, the 40mm bore offers 628N; if you need more power, the 63mm bore provides 1559N. Choose this SAILB configuration when the load must be secured in the rod-in position; select a SAILF variant instead if the extended position must be held. For applications needing the rod clamped at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

When integrating this lock cylinder, avoid using a fast-exhaust valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. Because the lock holds statically only at the terminal position, safety-critical suspended loads must have an additional independent safety measure. Replacement matches require a 50mm bore, 160mm stroke, back locker position, PT port threads, standard carbon steel rod, and no magnet.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X160 FAQ

At 0.5MPa operating pressure, the 50mm bore provides 982N of push force and 825N of pull force. At the maximum 1.0MPa pressure, it delivers up to 200kgf of push force.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging statically only when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It does not clamp mid-stroke; to release the hold, you must supply air to the release port or use the manual lever.
