Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X100

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X100 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø63mm bore, 100mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X100

The AirTAC SAILB63X100 is a double-acting profile cylinder dimensionally interchangeable per ISO 15552, featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. A carbon steel rod transfers substantial force, generating 1559N of push and 1402N of pull at 0.5 MPa. The lock is spring-applied and air-released, meaning it automatically engages a pin into the rod when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, securely holding the load without requiring continuous live air pressure.

Because the locker occupies one end, the variable air cushion on that back end is shorter at 21 mm compared to the 30 mm cushion on the front free end. You can unlock the rod automatically by supplying release air to the dedicated port, or by using the manual release lever. For position feedback, adding the -S magnet option allows the use of AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors in the dual-side barrel grooves.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds a lifted carriage securely at the retracted stroke end during a power loss or air drop, preventing gravity-driven falls.

Clamp and Hold

Maintains clamping force on a workpiece at the rod-in terminal without consuming continuous compressed air.

Gate Positioning

Keeps heavy safety gates locked closed at the retracted position until an air signal deliberately releases the mechanism.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X100 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 63 mm bore when a 50 mm bore (offering 982N push at 0.5 MPa) is insufficient for your load, but an 80 mm bore (2513N push) is oversized. Select the SAILB configuration specifically when the load must be held safely at the retracted rod-in position. If your application requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke-end hold, select the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead. The SAIL lock is a static holding device that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

When matching this cylinder for replacement, verify the 100 mm stroke, back locker position, 3/8 PT port threads, and standard carbon steel rod. Crucially, avoid using fast-exhaust valves with this lock cylinder; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock. If human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, implement an independent mechanical safety measure alongside the lock.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X100 FAQ

At 0.5 MPa operating pressure, the 63 mm bore provides 1559N of push force and 1402N of pull force. At the maximum 1.0 MPa pressure, it delivers up to 318 kgf.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod only at the retracted stroke end. It engages statically after the piston stops. You can unlock it automatically via air pressure or manually via a lever, but never use a fast-exhaust valve as back-pressure can release the lock.
