Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X100S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X100S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø63mm bore, 100mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X100S

The AirTAC SAILB63X100-S is a double-acting profile cylinder dimensionally interchangeable per ISO 15552, featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. A carbon steel rod and PT tapered ports are standard, while the included magnet enables precise position tracking with CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors. Delivering 1559N of push force at 0.5 MPa, it securely holds the load at the retracted stroke end when air pressure is removed.

This spring-applied, air-released lock engages automatically as a static holding device once the piston reaches the terminal position, meaning it will not arrest a moving rod. To maintain lock integrity, avoid fast-exhaust valves and use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the mechanism. The locker end also features a shorter variable air cushion (21 mm) compared to the free end (30 mm) to accommodate the locking hardware.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X100S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Prevents gravity-driven drops on vertical actuators by locking the rod in the retracted position during power loss or pressure drops.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor Hold-and-Release

Maintains a fixed position during process dwell times, releasing instantly only when supply air is restored to the unlock port.

build

Clamp at Stroke End

Secures a workpiece or fixture firmly at the retracted terminal without consuming continuous compressed air.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X100S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 63 mm bore when 50 mm (982N at 0.5 MPa) lacks the thrust for your vertical lift, or step up to 80 mm (2513N) for heavier loads. Select the SAILB configuration specifically when the mechanism must hold the load in the retracted rod-in position; for extended rod-out holding, the SAILF variant is required. If your application demands clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke-end hold, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice instead.

For safe operation, remember this lock holds statically without live pressure but is not a dynamic brake. Safety-critical loads suspended in the air require an additional independent safety measure. When replacing this unit, verify the 100 mm stroke, back locker position, 3/8 PT port, and the -S magnet option.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X100S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa, this 63 mm bore cylinder provides 1559N of push force and 1402N of pull force. At the maximum 1.0 MPa operating pressure, it delivers up to 318 kgf.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only at the retracted stroke end to hold the load statically. It unlocks automatically via air supply or via a manual lever, but it cannot clamp a moving rod or hold at arbitrary mid-stroke positions.
