Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X175S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X175S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø63mm bore, 175mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X175S

The AirTAC SAILB63X175-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. It safely holds the rod at the retracted stroke end, providing a static load-holding force of 1559N at 0.5MPa without requiring continuous live pressure. This unit includes a magnet for position sensing and uses a standard carbon steel rod.

A key design trait is that the variable air cushion at the locker end is slightly shorter (21mm) compared to the free end (30mm). The lock engages automatically via spring force when release air is cut, and you can disengage it using the manual release lever or by supplying air to the release port. It pairs with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors for precise end-of-stroke confirmation.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X175S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Load Holding

Secures elevated loads in the retracted position instantly upon air pressure loss, preventing sudden drops on lifting platforms.

lock

Clamp and Hold

Maintains solid clamping force at the retracted stroke end without consuming compressed air, ideal for energy-efficient machining fixtures.

shield

Safety Gate Hold

Keeps heavy safety gates or machine guards locked closed in the retracted terminal position until the release air is actively supplied.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X175S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 63mm bore when you need 1559N of push thrust at 0.5MPa; step down to a 50mm bore (982N) for lighter loads, or up to an 80mm bore (2513N) for heavier demands. Select the SAILB back-locker configuration to secure loads in the retracted position, whereas a SAILF front-locker holds the extended rod out. If your application requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

Because this is a static holding lock that engages after the cylinder stops, never treat it as a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. For safety-critical suspended loads, add an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement matches must align on the 175mm stroke, 3/8 PT port, and desired mounting style from the ISO 15552 set (Basic, FA, FB, TC, etc.).

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X175S FAQ

At 0.5MPa operating pressure, this 63mm bore cylinder provides a push force of 1559N and a pull force of 1402N. At 0.7MPa, the push force increases to 2182N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod securely at the retracted stroke end. It engages only after the piston stops at that terminal position and is released automatically by supplying air to the release port or manually via a lever.
