Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X225

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X225 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø63mm bore, 225mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X225

The AirTAC SAILB63X225 is a double-acting profile cylinder dimensionally interchangeable per ISO 15552, featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. A spring-applied, air-released mechanism holds the rod securely at the retracted stroke end, maintaining a static load without live pressure. In the 63mm bore class, it generates 1559N of push force and 1402N of pull force at 0.5MPa, utilizing a 20mm carbon steel rod with an M16x1.5 thread.

The lock engages only after the piston reaches the stroke terminal, functioning as a static holding device rather than a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Variable air cushions decelerate the load at both ends, though the cushion at the locker end is notably shorter at 21mm compared to 30mm on the free end. For position feedback, adding a magnet allows the use of CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X225 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Retract Hold

Secures elevated loads in the retracted position during power loss, preventing sudden drops.

End-Stroke Clamping

Maintains a firm mechanical hold on tooling only after the piston fully retracts to the back cover.

Lift Gate Safety

Keeps heavy gates safely retracted without relying on continuous air pressure.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X225 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 63mm bore when a 50mm bore yielding 982N push at 0.5MPa is insufficient, or step up to an 80mm bore providing 2513N if your load requires greater thrust. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be held in the retracted position; if the extended position needs holding, the SAILF variant is required. For applications needing the load clamped at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

Because the stroke is 225mm, ensure adequate side-load support by using a non-rotating guide or external rails to prevent rod binding. The lock is a static holding device, not a mid-stroke clamp or moving-rod brake. Avoid fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock; use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve instead. If human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, add an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement requires matching the 225mm stroke, back locker position, 3/8 PT port, and mounting style.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X225 FAQ

At 0.5MPa, this 63mm bore cylinder provides 1559N of push force and 1402N of pull force. At 0.7MPa, the push force increases to 2182N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only when the rod reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It provides a static hold, not a mid-stroke clamp, and can be unlocked automatically via air or manually via a lever.
