Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X700

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X700 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø63mm bore, 700mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X700

The AirTAC SAILB63X700 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air automatically drives a lock pin into the rod to hold it securely at the retracted stroke end without requiring live pressure. With a 63mm bore, it delivers 2182N of push force at 0.7MPa, making it well-suited for heavy vertical loads. The standard carbon steel rod provides durable service in industrial environments.

This model uses a 3/8 PT tapered port and operates at speeds from 30 to 800mm/s. A critical design detail is that the variable air cushion at the locker end is shorter (21mm) than the free-end cushion (30mm). The lock is a static holding device that engages only after the piston stops at the stroke terminal; it is not a dynamic brake. To release the rod, supply air to the release port for automatic unlocking or use the manual release lever.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X700 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Power-Loss Safety

Holds heavy raised platforms securely in the retracted position instantly when air pressure drops, preventing sudden falls.

conveyor_belt

Pallet Stopper Hold

Locks a stopper pin in the rod-in state at the end of stroke to halt conveyor flow without consuming continuous air.

shield

Safety Gate Lock

Secures a guard in the closed position by holding the rod at the retracted terminal, ensuring machine safety compliance.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X700 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 63mm bore model when an application requires 2182N push force at 0.7MPa and a guaranteed mechanical hold at the retracted position. If your process demands less force, stepping down to a 50mm bore yields 1374N at 0.7MPa, whereas a 80mm bore provides 3518N for heavier demands. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be secured in the rod-in position, and select a SAILF variant if the extended rod-out position needs holding. If your mechanism requires locking at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice instead.

For safe operation, never use a fast-exhaust valve with this lock cylinder; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve because back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally lift the lock. The 700mm stroke falls within the 1500mm maximum standard stroke limit but requires a side-load guide to prevent rod binding. When replacing this unit, match the 63mm bore, 700mm stroke, back locker position, 3/8 PT port, and mounting style. This non-magnet version lacks position sensing; adding a -S magnet enables CMSE reed and DMSE solid-state switches in the dual sensor grooves. If human safety depends on the load staying up, add an independent safety measure.

Quick checklist

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X700 FAQ

At 0.7MPa, the 63mm bore provides 2182N of push force and 1402N of pull force. The maximum operating pressure is 1.0MPa.

The spring-applied, air-released lock engages only when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It provides a static hold after the rod stops, not a dynamic brake. Unlock it automatically by supplying air to the release port or manually via the lever.
