The AirTAC SAILB63X900 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover. This lock safely secures the piston rod at the retracted stroke end, ensuring loads remain held without requiring continuous live air pressure. Operating at 0.5 MPa, it generates 1559N of push force and 1402N of pull force.

Because this is a 900 mm stroke, it exceeds standard sizing limits and requires careful attention to side-load guidance to prevent rod binding. The variable air cushion at the locker end is 21 mm, which is shorter than the 30 mm cushion on the free end. For position feedback, adding a -S magnet enables the use of CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X900 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 63 mm bore when 50 mm (982N push at 0.5 MPa) is insufficient but 80 mm (2513N) is oversized. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be secured in the retracted position; choose SAILF if the extended end requires holding. If your application demands locking at an arbitrary mid-stroke position rather than the stroke end, use the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead.

The lock is a static holding device that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Avoid fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock; use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. For safety-critical suspended loads, always add an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement requires matching the 900 mm stroke, back locker position, 3/8 PT port, and standard mounting.
