Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X1000

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X1000 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø80mm bore, 1000mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X1000

The AirTAC SAILB80X1000 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. This built-in lock engages automatically when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, securely holding the rod and load without requiring continuous live air pressure. Delivering a push force of 2513N at 0.5MPa, it uses a 25mm carbon steel rod and a 3/8 PT port.

Because the lock occupies one end cover, the variable air cushion on the locker side is shorter (22.5mm) compared to the 36mm cushion on the free end. The lock is a static holding device, not a dynamic brake, meaning it only engages after the cylinder has fully stopped. For position feedback, adding a magnet (-S) allows the use of AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE solid-state sensors.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

0.5 MPa2513 N2268 N

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X1000 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Prevents gravity-driven drops on vertical lifts by mechanically locking the rod in the retracted position during a sudden air pressure loss.

conveyor_belt

Heavy Conveyor Hold

Holds a loaded conveyor section stationary at the end of its inward stroke without consuming continuous compressed air.

shield

Machine Guard Positioning

Secures a heavy machine guard in the closed position, requiring an active air signal to unlock and open the barrier.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X1000 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 80mm bore cylinder when an application requires 2513N of push force at 0.5MPa, stepping up from a 63mm bore that provides 1559N. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be held at the rod-in position; if you need to hold the load extended, the SAILF variant places the lock in the front cover instead. If your process requires locking at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

With a 1000mm stroke exceeding the 1500mm standard maximum, this is a non-standard stroke requiring a side-load guide to prevent rod bending. Remember that the lock holds statically at the stroke end only, not as a moving-rod brake. Avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve instead. For human-safety applications, always add an independent mechanical safety measure.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X1000 FAQ

At 0.5MPa, this 80mm bore cylinder provides a push force of 2513N and a pull force of 2268N. At 0.7MPa, the push force increases to 3518N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end. It holds statically after the rod stops and does not brake a moving rod. Unlocking is achieved automatically by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.
