Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X225S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X225S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø80mm bore, 225mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X225S

The AirTAC SAILB80X225-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. Because the lock engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, it safely holds vertical loads in place without requiring continuous live air pressure. With a 25mm carbon steel rod and a 3/8 PT port, it generates 2513N of push force at 0.5 MPa, making it well-suited for heavy lifting and holding tasks.

This unit includes a magnetic piston (-S) for position detection using AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE solid-state sensors. To accommodate the locking hardware, the variable air cushion at the locker end is 22.5mm, which is shorter than the 36mm cushion found on the non-locking front end. The lock is a static holding device that engages after the cylinder stops; it is not a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Secures elevated platforms in the retracted position automatically upon loss of air pressure, preventing sudden drops.

Pallet Stopper

Halts and locks pallets securely at the end of a conveyor line during processing or indexing operations.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X225S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 80mm bore when a 63mm bore (providing 1559N push at 0.5 MPa) is insufficient for your load, but a 100mm bore (3927N) would be excessive. Choose the SAILB configuration specifically when the load must be secured in the retracted position. If your application requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, select the AirTAC BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead. For strokes of 225mm or more, using a guide rail is recommended to prevent excessive side-loading on the carbon steel rod.

When integrating this cylinder, avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. The lock holds the load statically at the stroke end, but if human safety depends on the load remaining up, implement an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement requires matching the 80mm bore, 225mm stroke, back locker position, 3/8 PT port, and the -S magnet option.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X225S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa, the 80mm bore provides 2513N of push force and 2268N of pull force. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 3518N.

The spring-applied, air-released lock engages statically when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end. It does not clamp at mid-stroke. Unlocking is achieved automatically by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.
