Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X300

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X300 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø80mm bore, 300mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X300

The AirTAC SAILB80X300 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. Because the lock engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, it securely holds the rod-in position without requiring continuous live air pressure. In the 80 mm bore class, this actuator generates 2513 N of push thrust and 2268 N of pull thrust at 0.5 MPa, utilizing a 25 mm carbon steel rod and 3/8 PT porting.

A key design trait of this SAIL variant is that the variable air cushion at the locker end is physically shorter (22.5 mm) than the standard 36 mm cushion on the front end. The lock itself is a static holding device that engages only after the cylinder stops; it is not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. For position sensing, adding an -S magnet allows the use of AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE electronic solid-state switches in the dual sensor grooves.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X300 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Load Holding

Secures elevated loads in the retracted position during a power loss event, utilizing the spring-applied back cover lock to prevent gravity-driven drops.

shield

Safety Gate Interlock

Holds safety gates or guarding panels firmly closed at the rod-in stroke end without consuming continuous compressed air.

factory

Clamp and Hold

Maintains static clamping pressure on machined parts at the end of the retraction stroke, ensuring stability while machining forces are applied.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X300 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 80 mm bore when an application requires 2513 N push force at 0.5 MPa, stepping up from a 63 mm bore that provides 1559 N, or down from a 100 mm bore yielding 3927 N. Choose the SAILB configuration specifically when the load must be secured at the retracted rod-in position; if the extended rod-out position needs holding, the SAILF variant is required instead. Because this model features a 300 mm stroke, external guide rails should be used to prevent excessive side-loading on the carbon steel rod.

If your application requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke-end hold, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice. To maintain safety, never use a fast-exhaust valve with this actuator, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock—always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. For human-safety critical loads, add an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement specifications must match the 80 mm bore, 300 mm stroke, back locker position, 3/8 PT port threads, and desired mounting style from the ISO 15552 interchangeable set (Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, FTC, TCM1, TCM2).

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X300 FAQ

At 0.5 MPa operating pressure, the 80 mm bore generates 2513 N of push force and 2268 N of pull force. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 3518 N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod only at the fully retracted stroke end. It engages statically after the cylinder stops and is unlocked by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever; it does not clamp at mid-stroke.
