Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X400

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X400 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø80mm bore, 400mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X400

The AirTAC SAILB80X400 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. A spring-applied, air-released mechanism engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, securely holding the carbon steel rod and load without requiring live pressure. At 0.7 MPa, this 80mm bore generates 3518N of push thrust, making it well-suited for heavy vertical lifting tasks.

Because the lock occupies the rear end cover, the variable air cushion on that side is shorter at 22.5mm compared to the 36mm cushion on the free end. Unlocking is achieved automatically by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever. For position sensing, the extruded aluminum barrel includes sensor grooves compatible with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic solid-state switches.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X400 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Hold

Secures elevated loads on power loss by locking the rod in the retracted position without relying on continuous air pressure.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor Stop

Holds a stopped pallet firmly at the retracted stroke end during processing, preventing drift before the cycle resumes.

shield

Safety Gate Lock

Keeps heavy safety gates and access doors securely closed and locked at the rod-in position until release air is supplied.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X400 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 80mm bore model when an application requires 3518N of push force at 0.7 MPa; stepping down to a 63mm bore yields 2182N, while a 100mm bore provides 5497N. Select the SAILB configuration specifically because the load must be secured at the retracted rod-in position, whereas a SAILF variant holds the extended rod-out end. If your process requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke terminal, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct alternative.

When integrating this 400mm stroke cylinder, add an external guide to support the rod and prevent excessive side-loading. Remember this lock is a static holding device that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve instead. For loads where human safety depends on the cylinder staying up, add an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement parts require matching the 80mm bore, 400mm stroke, rear locker position, 3/8 PT port, and the desired mounting style from the ISO 15552 interface.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X400 FAQ

At an operating pressure of 0.7 MPa, the 80mm bore provides 3518N of push thrust and 2268N of pull thrust. The maximum operating pressure is 1.0 MPa.

The spring-applied, air-released lock engages statically when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It does not clamp mid-stroke. You can unlock it automatically by supplying air to the release port or manually via the release lever.
