Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X900S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X900S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø80mm bore, 900mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X900S

The AirTAC SAILB80X900-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air drives a pin into the carbon steel rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without consuming live pressure. You can unlock it automatically by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever. With a 25 mm rod and a 3/8 PT port, it delivers 2513 N of push force and 2268 N of pull force at 0.5 MPa.

This model includes a magnetic piston (-S) for position sensing and is fully compatible with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic solid-state switches. A key design detail is that the variable air cushion at the locker end is shorter (22.5 mm) than the free-end cushion (36 mm). The cushion solely decelerates the piston near stroke termination; the mechanical lock is the true static holding mechanism. Furthermore, this is a stroke-end lock, meaning it engages only after the rod has stopped, rather than acting as a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

0.5 MPa2513 N2268 N

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X900S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Secures elevated loads in the retracted position instantly upon air pressure loss, preventing sudden drops on vertical lifting fixtures.

conveyor_belt

Long-Stroke Gating

Holds heavy 900 mm stroke diverters and gates firmly closed at the rod-in stroke end without requiring continuous air supply.

precision_manufacturing

Clamp and Hold

Maintains static clamping force on machined parts at the retracted terminal, ensuring zero drift during power loss.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X900S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 80 mm bore when an application requires more force than the 63 mm class (which provides 1402 N pull at 0.5 MPa) but does not need the bulk of the 100 mm class. The 900 mm stroke falls within the standard maximum limit of 1500 mm for this bore, but at this length you must use external guide rails to prevent excessive side-loading on the rod seals. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be safely held in the retracted (rod-in) position; choose SAILF if the extended position requires holding. If your process demands clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than at the end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

For safe operation, never use a fast-exhaust valve with this cylinder, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock; an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. Always confirm the exact lock holding force from the official datasheet, and if human safety depends on the load staying retracted, install an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement units must match the 80 mm bore, 900 mm stroke, back locker position, 3/8 PT port, and -S magnet specification.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X900S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa operating pressure, this 80 mm bore cylinder generates 2513 N of push force and 2268 N of pull force. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 3518 N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod only at the fully retracted stroke end. It engages statically after the cylinder stops and is released automatically via air pressure or manually via a lever; it does not clamp mid-stroke.
